FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Feb. 13, 2026) – During National Salute to Veterans Week, the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System became a vibrant hub of activity and heartfelt appreciation. The week was dedicated to honoring the esteemed veteran community through a series of meaningful events. VANIHCS Executive Director, Jon Beidelschies, expressed the collective sentiment, saying, “This week, out of appreciation and respect, we salute men and women who have paid and continue to pay the price of freedom. During National Salute, many American citizens visit hospitalized Veterans to thank them for what they have done for our country in the past and support them in the many challenges they may face. Honoring these special men and women during this special time is key in our history. Knowing freedom is not free. It is earned with their valor, commitment, and unwavering patriotism, which is worthy of all our time, energy, and appreciation.”

The celebratory week began with significant community involvement. On Tuesday, Indiana Tech’s Women’s Soccer Team, along with volunteers from various community organizations and the Fort Wayne Superheroes, took on the heartwarming mission of distributing valentines. They visited inpatient and outpatient Veterans throughout the hospital, bringing with them a wave of smiles and heartfelt gratitude. The Fort Wayne Superheroes, known for their dedication to community service, made a special impact by handing out valentines and taking pictures with Veterans, creating moments of joy and connection.

Adding to the day’s events, the VANIHCS Executive Leadership presented a centenarian certificate to a local Veteran's niece, celebrating the incredible milestone of reaching 100 years of age. This gesture highlighted not just the longevity but the enduring legacy of those who have served, honoring their long lives and significant contributions.

The celebrations continued with a poignant ceremony on Wednesday at the Marion VA Medical Center. Marion Mayor Ronald Morrell, Jr. played a pivotal role in the festivities, offering his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the nation's heroes. In his address, Mayor Morrell thanked Veterans for their service and their continuous contributions as outstanding members of the community. His words served as a reminder of the vital role Veterans play not only in national defense but also as pillars of local society.

Jon Beidelschies further emphasized this sentiment, stating, “The men and women we honor served proudly and courageously in America’s defense. Their service ensured our freedom as individuals, our freedom as a Nation, and the freedom of our friends and allies around the world. There are no words that can adequately express what their sacrifices have meant to the Nation. But we can take time to express our personal thanks and appreciation to them.”

The Marion High School JROTC lent their support and respect by presenting the Colors during the Pledge of Allegiance, a gesture that symbolized the respect and admiration held for Veterans by the younger generation. This act of reverence made the ceremony even more profound and touching.

Demonstrating community generosity, the Gary Sinise Foundation made a significant contribution by donating meals for outpatients. This thoughtful act ensured that those visiting the facility were well-nourished, providing not just sustenance but also a sense of care and appreciation. Volunteers were actively involved, distributing valentines to Veterans and wishing them a happy Valentine’s Day, further adding to the day's spirit of acknowledgment and celebration.

Centenarian Veterans were honored once more as Beidelschies presented certificates to those who had reached the remarkable age of 100, acknowledging their significant and impactful lives. Volunteers also distributed thoughtful gifts to inpatient Veterans, showing unwavering gratitude and support to those currently receiving care.

Wendy Ashly, head of the VANIHCS Center for Community Development and Civic Engagement, reflected on the week’s events, stating, “This heartwarming collaboration and display of community support made for a memorable National Salute to Veterans Week, reflecting the deep appreciation for the service and sacrifices of our Veterans.”

The series of events throughout National Salute to Veterans Week at VANIHCS not only honored the bravery and sacrifices of those who served but also highlighted the profound respect and gratitude felt by the entire community. From heartfelt gestures to significant recognitions, the week was a testament to the unwavering appreciation for our Veterans. Through these collective efforts, the community came together to express a deep and enduring gratitude for the men and women who have dedicated their lives to the nation’s service.
