Earth Day

22 April 2019 Earth DayApril 22, 2019, marks the 49th anniversary of Earth Day – a milestone in the history of the modern environmental movement.  The impetus for the event was the growing concern by Americans over the deteriorated condition of the environment and the depletion of natural resources.  Then Senator Gaylord Nelson External link to a government website (D-Wisc.) proposed celebrating “Earth Day” to show the importance of public support of the environment in effecting political change.

More than 20 million people rallied to celebrate the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, which led to the passage of numerous environmental protection laws, including:  the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).  Section 6002 of RCRA launched the Federal Green Purchasing Program (FGPP) by requiring agencies to purchase recycled content items designated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

While much progress has been made to improve the health of the environment over the past nearly five decades, much remains to be done.  For ways to celebrate and make Every Day Earth Day at work, at home, and in your community, visit the EPA’s Earth Day Web portal External link to a government website.
