Chief Officer/Executive Director
Surafeal Asgedom was appointed Chief Officer for Modernization in April 2017. In this role, he is leading efforts to modernize the Department’s capabilities to deliver timely care and quality services to America’s Veterans by helping to transform VA into a modern, high performing organization.
The Modernization Office is charged with simplifying operations and improving customer experience by: creating efficiencies, optimizing VA organizational structures, enhancing corporate services to enable mission delivery, streamlining and integrating disparate initiatives, enabling cross-government agency collaboration, and rapidly executing leadership strategic priorities with the end goal of improving the value of services provided to Veterans.
Prior to his service at VA, Mr. Asgedom managed strategic and operational finance for multiple hospitals along with large ambulatory network at Mount Sinai Health System. As Corporate Vice President, he was member of the leadership team involved with post-merger integration of clinical operations and corporate services to create an integrated health system in addition to leading innovative digital strategy to increase access to quality care.
In addition to his leadership roles in healthcare organizations, Mr. Asgedom was a management consultant focused on process improvement, digital innovation, strategic planning, change management, and tactical implementation across the dimensions of people, process and technology. He holds a master’s degree from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego. He is married with two young children.
