Major Management Challenges
The Office of Inspector General's (OIG) mission is to serve veterans and the public by conducting effective oversight of the programs and operations of VA through independent audits, inspections, investigations, and reviews. OIG also recommends improvements in VA programs and operations and acts to deter and detect waste, fraud, and abuse. VA's three administrations that serve veterans: Veterans Health Administration, Veterans Benefits Administration, and National Cemetery Administration, must provide services and benefits in a manner that best meets the needs of all veterans. To this end, it is critical that they work collaboratively with support services such as financial management, procurement, and information management to optimize their effectiveness.
Annually, OIG provides VA with a report summarizing the major management challenges and high-risk areas, identified through OIG's work, that are facing the Department within OIG's six strategic goals of healthcare delivery, benefits processing, financial management, procurement practices, information management, and workforce investment. This report also provides an assessment of VA's progress in addressing these identified challenges. OIG will continue to work with VA to address each challenge to ensure our Nation's veterans and their families receive the best possible service and to ensure appropriate expenditure of taxpayer money.
