VA OIG Budget Information

The mission of the Office of Inspector General (OIG) is to serve veterans and the public by conducting effective oversight of VA programs and operations through independent audits, inspections, investigations, and reviews. The OIG also recommends improvements in VA programs and operations and acts to deter and detect waste, fraud, and abuse. Oversight work is guided by the goals and objectives set out in the OIG Strategic Plan.

The OIG is funded through a dedicated line item in VA’s budget. The budget requests for the OIG are included in Volume 3 of VA's annual budget documents and are reproduced separately below. Under Section 8 of the Inspector General Reform Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-409), in addition to listing the President’s proposed budget, information must be included related to whether the OIG believes it is adequate to perform effective oversight.

VA OIG funding is included in the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies funding bill. Enacted (final) funding levels for each fiscal year (FY) appear in a subsequent budget request. For example, the OIG’s FY 2018 enacted funding level is referenced in the FY 2020 budget request.
