Acting Assistant Secretary for Accountability and Whistleblower Protection
Mr. Cordeiro was named Acting Assistant Secretary for Accountability and Whistleblower Protection on January 20, 2021. The Office of Accountability and Whistleblower Protection (OAWP) was established under the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act of 2017 and advises the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on all matters relating to accountability.
Mr. Cordeiro continues to serve as the OAWP Executive Director for Investigations, a position he has held since November 2019. He oversees investigations into allegations of whistleblower retaliation; investigations into allegations of senior leader misconduct and poor performance; referrals of whistleblower disclosures made by VA employees and applicants for employment to VA; quality assurance of OAWP’s investigative process; and the development and implementation of whistleblower rights and protections training for VA employees.
Mr. Cordeiro previously worked in VA’s Office of General Counsel (OGC). He was a principal advisor to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and General Counsel on matters related to employment and labor law. Mr. Cordeiro started his career at VA in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and helped implement VA’s Caregiver Support Program.
Prior to joining VA, Mr. Cordeiro worked for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) where he helped implement several landmark reforms to the Government’s personnel systems.
