Daniel R. Sitterly
Assistant Secretary for Human Resources and Administration/Operations, Security, and Preparedness
Mr. Daniel R. Sitterly was sworn in as Assistant Secretary for Human Resources and Administration on January 7, 2019. In this position, he provides human capital management and oversees human resources support to more than 370,000 VA employees, including 6,000 human resources professionals across the country. To meet the needs of the VA workforce, Mr. Sitterly leads an HR&A/OSP team that provides professional assistance in the areas of Administration, Human Resources Management, Diversity and Inclusion, Labor-Management Relations, Veterans Employment, Employee Development, Senior Executive Management, Resolution Management, and Operations, Security and Emergency Preparedness.
Mr. Sitterly served more than 30 years in the U.S. Air Force and the Department of the Air Force with experience and qualifications in budget, accounting and finance, information management, communications, services, personnel, and legislative affairs.
Prior to his appointment to VA, Mr. Sitterly served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs from 2014 to 2019. He served as Acting Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs from 2014 to 2017. He assisted in executing the responsibilities of the Assistant Secretary in the supervision of manpower, military and civilian personnel, Reserve Component affairs, and readiness support for the Department of the Air Force. Prior to his appointment within AF MR&A, Mr. Sitterly served as the Deputy Director, Air Force Staff, Headquarters U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Sitterly began his career in the Air Force as an enlisted member in 1976. He was commissioned in 1985 and then served as a combat service support officer through 2003. After retiring from active duty, he served six more years in the Air Force Reserve. In 2004, he entered federal civil service full time as the Chief, Congressional Action Division, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. In 2008, he became the Director of Staff, Legislative Liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. From 2009 until 2012, he served as Director, Force Development, Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services, Headquarters U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Sitterly earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and Asian studies from the University of Maryland, and a Master of Science in Education from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, the Joint Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va and the Air War College by seminar.
His military service awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters. His civilian awards include, the Meritorious Executive Presidential Rank Award, the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, and the Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service.
