2011 Local Athlete Profile
Harry Hillen, Jr.39 Years old The 31st National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Pittsburgh will be the first Games that Harry Hillen has participated in. Although Hillen thinks Pennsylvania is a beautiful state and he is excited that the Games are in Pittsburgh this year, he will always be a diehard Cleveland Browns fan as he is originally from Cleveland, Ohio. Hillen was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1993. In 2008, a tumor was discovered on his spinal cord, causing him to suffer partial paralysis. He had the tumor removed, it returned, and was removed again in January 2011. Hillen has a positive attitude and believes everything happens for a reason. He has a beautiful wife, a 6-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. He is currently a student at California University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Justice Studies. Hillen is the chairperson for Accessible Dreams a new company that builds adaptive homes to meet the needs of people with disabilities. He is hoping his company will assist other Veterans disabilities by making their lives easier. At the suggestion of a physical therapist, Hilled decided to participate in the Wheelchair Games this year. He is competing in handcycling, nine-ball and bowling. Hillen is looking forward to competing and meeting other Veterans at the Games. |
