Committed to your wellness: Protecting yourself and those you love this respiratory illness season

Female provider holding a "get your flu shot" message

As the fall and winter months approach, so does the season of respiratory illnesses — including influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), COVID-19, and pneumonia.

These illnesses can pose serious health risks, especially for older adults and those with underlying medical conditions. But there’s good news: vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Why vaccination matters

Vaccines don’t just reduce your risk of getting sick — they also help prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and even death. For Veterans aged 65 and older, or those with chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or lung issues, the consequences of these infections can be especially serious.

That’s why VA strongly recommends flu vaccines for all adults, and encourages eligible Veterans to talk with their health care provider about whether COVID-19 and RSV vaccines are right for them.

Where to get vaccinated

Veterans enrolled in VA health care can receive flu, COVID-19, RSV, and pneumonia vaccines at no cost through several convenient options:

  • At your local VA facility — Schedule an appointment or ask during your next visit.
  • Through VA’s community care network — Many local pharmacies and urgent care centers offer flu and COVID-19 vaccines to eligible Veterans.
  • During routine appointments — Ask your provider if you can receive your vaccine during your scheduled visit.

Simple steps to stay healthy

In addition to vaccination, you can reduce your risk of spreading illness by:

  • Washing your hands frequently
  • Covering coughs and sneezes
  • Staying home when you feel sick
  • Avoiding close contact with others who are ill
