Meet Thomas Ballan-Duran, a remarkable individual with a contagious smile and a deep love for gnomes.

Hailing from Texas, Thomas's journey has taken him from the front lines of the Army, where he served as a Combat Medic in Afghanistan, to his current role as Nurse Manager of Outpatient Mental Health at the Phoenix VA. Along the way, he has faced challenges, embraced personal growth, and become a source of inspiration for many.

Thomas's military journey spanned nine years, including a pivotal year in Afghanistan where the uncertainties of war loomed large. "There was a time I felt we wouldn't come back," Thomas reflects. Despite the hardships, he found fulfillment in bringing his unit of 21 soldiers back home safely. "I really had to focus on the training I received and not get into my head," he shares. Thomas maintains a strong bond with his army brothers, cherishing the care packages and letters that served as lifelines during challenging times.

"No matter how difficult life can get, you can overcome it as long as you put your mind into it," Thomas asserts. He acknowledges the challenges in his personal growth journey but emphasizes the importance of open ears and genuine listening. "I have open ears for everyone, listen to listen," he says, reflecting his commitment to compassion and understanding.

Transitioning to civilian life, Thomas began his career as a Nurse at the Phoenix VA, specializing in the Inpatient Mental Health unit. Reflecting on mental health, he offers a valuable tip: "Sometimes we rush into it. You have to slow down and process. It's okay to ask for help; it's okay to not be okay." Thomas praises the abundant resources available at the Phoenix VA once help is sought.

Dedicated to making a positive impact, Thomas actively participates in various committees, including Chairman of Nursing Recreation Retention, PMDB Faculty Trainer, National Master Trainer in Training, PVAHCS LGBTQ+ Special Emphasis Program Manager, National Association for Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), and the Arizona Nurse Honor Guard. "I like to network, spread as many resources to staff and Veterans," he shares, highlighting the importance of going above and beyond to provide care to Veterans.

"Take pride in the work you do," Thomas advises, a philosophy he exemplifies in his pursuit of a Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Grand Canyon University, with an expected graduation in May 2024. Recently promoted to Nurse Manager of Outpatient Mental Health, he expresses his passion for making a difference, serving as a mentor, leader, and safe space for his staff.

Thomas Ballan-Duran's journey is a testament to resilience, compassion, and the transformative power of dedicating oneself to the well-being of others. As he continues to grow in his career, Thomas remains an inspiring figure, embodying the spirit of service and care for both his colleagues and the Veterans he serves.
