Phoenix VA kicked off its new partnership with the Phoenix Public Library with the welcome of their bookmobile at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center, July 1.

The Phoenix Public Library’s Bookmobile offers approximately  2,500 items for check out featuring a diverse range of authors, genres and age levels including an extensive children’s and teen collection, a collection of large print books and Spanish materials, a designated children’s space with a reading bench, interior and exterior monitors, seed library items and culture passes, Wi-Fi, accessible lift for ADA access and a 20-foot retractable awning to provide shade and shelter for outdoor access and activities.

Veterans, their families, caregivers and Phoenix VA staff stopped by for the kick-off and took a moment to get relief from the outside heat on the mobile which has full air conditioning, comfortable seating for patrons and a lift for wheelchair access.

The bookmobile offers Veterans the convenience of library services without having to venture out to main branch benefitting those who may have transportation issues.

“We are offering Veterans the ability to get library cards, information about the library programs, and to check out books, materials, and seeds without having to venture out to main branch locations,” said Keith Lord, branch manager of the Bookmobile.

Many local Veterans received the word about the event and decided to stop by with family.

“I came out today to support my son who likes to read,” said U.S. Air Force Veteran Ted Burke. “I may find something I like as well,” he said.

The traveling library has pop-ups in different locations across the valley from parks to schools and now the VA. The library issued new library cards and checked out more than 30 items to patrons during their visit.

The Bookmobile will visit the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center every first Tuesday of the month and will return August 5, 2025, from 10 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
