Nick Choy is the Public Information & Congressional Affairs Specialist for the VA Portland Health Care System, and is based at the Vancouver VA Campus.
Nick Choy is an experienced Public Information & Public Relations professional with nearly three decades of experience in strategic communications and planning at Fortune 100 and 500 companies, and the highest levels of Department of Defense, National Guard Bureau and the State of Oregon.
He holds a Bachelor degree in Journalism and Public Speaking, Master’s Certificate in Library Sciences and Archival Management, and additional professional training and real-world experience in Emergency Management, Disaster Preparedness & Response and Crisis Communications. He also has additional corporate and agency experience in creative content generation, corporate problem solving and high-level project and budget management. He also possesses a passion for effective communications and proper strategic brand representation and has spearheaded enterprise-wide rebranding at both the corporate and agency levels throughout his career.
Born and raised in Hawaii to a career-Air Force father and professional career mother, Nick relocated to the Pacific Northwest following his graduation from the University of Hawaii-Manoa. Between 2006 and 2016, he served as the Image Resource Manager at Nike, Inc., the head of Corporate Creative for InFocus Corporation, and as the Deputy Public Affairs Officer for the Oregon Military Department. He has recently served as the Chief of Public Affairs and Advertising for the US Army Recruiting Command-Portland Recruiting Battalion from August 2020 until February 2024, when he was appointed as the Public Affairs Officer, Public and Congressional Affairs, VA Portland Health Care System.
From 2020-2022, Nick served on the Board of Directors for a non-profit start up dedicated to grass-roots community-led emergency preparedness and education. As the Director of Corporate Communications for PathFinderEX, Nick marshalled the group through two real-world training exercises, designed and built the online brand and public facing website, and assisted with drafting and publication of the agency’s official training manual and operational policy.
Nick also recently served as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Medical Administration Services for the 194th Medical Group, Washington Air National Guard, based at Camp Murray, Washington, ultimately retiring from his military obligation in January 2023. He has participated in multiple deployments to Bulgaria, Bangladesh and Vietnam, and served multiple assignments in Washington D.C.--most notably, a six-month special assignment with the US Air Force Public Affairs office at the Pentagon researching and drafting the agency’s new social media policy. Between the United States Coast Guard, Hawaii Air National Guard’s 154th Wing, Oregon Air National Guard’s 142nd Fighter Wing, and the Washington Air National Guard’s 194th Wing, Nick has served his nation and state in uniform for 35 years.
Nick is married, with two young children, and lives in Vancouver, Washington. In addition to providing support as a military spouse to his wife who is a Squadron Commander with the US Air Force Reserve unit at Joint-Base Lewis-McChord, he spends his free me volunteering with his sons’ Cub Scout pack, and serves as a part-me volunteer assistant coach with the Hazel Dell Little League, and enjoys camping, travelling, reading novels, trading movie and TV trivia with other like-minded nerds, and occasionally building race and show cars, as me and funds allow.
