Heart health is influenced by more than physical factors alone. Stress, emotional well-being and connection all play a role—especially for Women Veterans balancing service-related experiences and everyday demands.

At the Providence Vet Center, Women Veterans recently came together for a Heart Art event that blended creativity with heart health awareness. Hosted in partnership with the Providence Art Club, the event provided a veteran-centered, welcoming space for reflection, conversation and support.

Participants explored how stress and emotional health can affect the heart through guided art activities and open discussion. Using creativity as a starting point, Women Veterans reflected on their personal health journeys while connecting with peers who shared similar experiences.

“Art creates space for expression that words alone sometimes can’t,” said Heather Tarducci, director of the Providence Vet Center. “This event allowed Women Veterans to engage with heart health in a way that felt safe, supportive and personal.”

By hosting the event in a non-traditional setting, the Vet Center reduced barriers that can prevent Veterans from engaging in health conversations. The informal environment encouraged participation and helped normalize discussions around stress, mental health and self-care as essential parts of heart health.

Edward Smith, Veteran Outreach Program Specialist at the Providence Vet Center, emphasized the power of shared experience. “Connection is at the heart of what we do,” Smith said. “When Women Veterans come together through creativity, it strengthens trust and reminds them they are not alone in caring for their health.”

The Heart Art event reinforced that heart health is not only about medical appointments or tests. It is also shaped by emotional wellness, stress management and meaningful connection with others. Through art and conversation, participants were encouraged to recognize stress as a modifiable risk factor and to explore healthy coping strategies.
