Heroes at the Gate: Life-Saving Heroism Recognized at VA Providence
On Tuesday, August 27th, VA Providence honored a group of exceptional individuals whose quick thinking and decisive actions on May 23rd saved a man's life.
VISN 1 Network Director Ryan Lilly and VA Providence Director Lawrence Connell were present to hand out the well-deserved ICARE Awards, celebrating the bravery and dedication of the following staff members: Antonio Angelino, Chad Diore, Nicole Douglas, Kayla Duguay, Kevin Grant, Thomas Juda, Alexis MacLamroc, Michael McCoy, James McKay, Robin Morris, and Rudy Rey.
That evening, Rudy Rey and Robin Morris were leaving work when they noticed a contractor collapsed behind a fenced-off area near the Valley Street gate. Without hesitation, they sprang into action. Robin immediately contacted VA Police while Rudy began assessing the contractor and initiated CPR. Their quick response set into motion a coordinated effort involving VA Police, emergency department staff, and dispatch, ensuring the contractor received immediate life-saving care.
Within minutes, a team of VA Providence professionals worked together to stabilize the situation. VA Police facilitated transport to and from the main building while also escorting Providence Rescue to the correct location on campus. The combined efforts of all involved allowed life-saving measures to be administered until Providence Rescue arrived and transported the contractor to Rhode Island Hospital, where he ultimately recovered.
In addition to the ICARE Awards, Rudy Rey and Robin Morris were presented with special recognition for their extraordinary situational awareness and composure. Their heroic actions, just seconds after the contractor collapsed, were critical in saving a life.
VA Providence is proud to recognize and celebrate these remarkable individuals. Their dedication and swift action exemplify the very best of our VA Providence family. Congratulations to all awardees for their bravery and commitment!
