Standing Together in Red: VA Providence Amplifies Women Veterans’ Heart Health

By Justyn Charon, Public Affairs Specialist
The VA Providence Healthcare System participated in the Southern New England Go Red for Women event, strengthening community partnerships, sharing Women Veteran resources and reinforcing the importance of heart health awareness and prevention.
Heart disease remains the leading health risk facing women, including Women Veterans. To amplify awareness and promote prevention, VA Providence joined regional partners at the Southern New England Go Red for Women event, held at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
The event brought together community members, health professionals and survivors for a day focused on education, empowerment and action. By participating, VA Providence reinforced its commitment to ensuring Women Veterans are informed, supported and connected to care designed to meet their unique health needs.
Women Veterans Program Manager Joanne Barrett, Public Affairs Specialist Justyn Charon, and Whole Health Chief Micaela Costa represented VA Providence at the event. Together, they engaged with attendees, shared information about VA Providence’s Women Veteran Program and highlighted resources available to support heart health and overall well-being.
“Events like this allow us to meet Women Veterans and community members in spaces that are empowering and visible,” Barrett said. “It’s about making sure Women Veterans know they are seen, supported and have access to care that understands their experiences.”
A powerful highlight of the day was the participation of Air Force Veteran and VA Providence nurse Casey Botelho in the event’s fashion show. Taking to the runway, Pereira shared her story as a Veteran, stroke survivor, and a health care professional, embodying resilience, strength and hope.
“Being part of this event was deeply meaningful,” Botelho said. “It’s a reminder that survival and strength can coexist, and that sharing our stories can help others prioritize their heart health.”
VA Providence also extends sincere thanks to Frank Maher of the American Heart Association for his efforts in making VA Providence’s participation possible. His support helped strengthen collaboration and ensured Women Veterans’ voices and experiences were represented throughout the event.
