On Friday, February 23rd, VA Providence Healthcare System hosted a special event to celebrate Black History Month and honor the contributions of African Americans to the nation and the military.

VA Providence Director Lawrence Connell delivered a pre-recorded video speech on the importance of celebrating Black History Month. He highlighted the achievements and challenges of African Americans throughout history, and emphasized the need for diversity, inclusion, and respect in the VA and society. He also thanked the staff and Veterans for their service and dedication, and encouraged them to continue learning and growing together.

The guest speaker was Major Ashley Johnson, US Army, US Military Academy Graduate, and Blackhawk Pilot, who travelled from West Point, NY to be present for the event. She shared her personal journey of becoming a military officer and a helicopter pilot, and the obstacles and opportunities she faced along the way. She inspired the audience with her passion and courage, and urged them to pursue their dreams and goals.

The event was well-attended by staff, veterans, and guests, who enjoyed the speeches and the lively discussion that followed. The event was organized by Michael Norde, a VA Providence Patient Advocate, and the VA Providence Patient Experience Committee, with the support of the Public Affairs Office and Voluntary Services. The event was part of the VA Providence's ongoing efforts to celebrate diversity and foster a culture of inclusion and belonging for all.
