More than 30 Women Veterans came together Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, for a guided tour of the International Museum of World War II in Wakefield, R.I.

Organized by VA Providence Women Veteran Program Manager Joanne Barrett, a U.S. Air Force Veteran, the visit created space for learning, reflection and connection through shared military experience.

Located in Wakefield, the museum is the educational arm of the World War II Foundation and houses thousands of authentic artifacts from all major theaters of the war. Exhibits feature uniforms, equipment, personal items and firsthand accounts that bring World War II history to life. The museum also preserves stories through documentary films and educational programming designed to ensure future generations understand the sacrifices made during the war.

During the guided tour, Women Veterans explored the galleries together, discussed the role of women in wartime service and industry, and reflected on how the experiences of World War II Veterans connect to their own service. The setting encouraged conversation, shared memories and a deeper appreciation for the legacy of those who served before them.

“Our goal is to create meaningful experiences where Women Veterans feel seen, supported and connected,” said Joanne Barrett, Women Veteran Program Manager at VA Providence Healthcare System. “This tour gave our Veterans the opportunity to learn from history while building relationships with one another in a welcoming, Veteran-centered space.”

The visit also highlighted the museum’s commitment to honoring Veterans. The International Museum of World War II offers free admission to all Veterans and continues to serve as a place of remembrance, education and respect for military service.
