On August 20, 2025, VA Puget Sound Health Care System celebrated the official opening of its new Oak Harbor Clinic at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island during a ceremony held outside the Naval Health Clinic Oak Harbor Building, where the new VA clinic is located. This partnership, a first-of-its-kind for the VA and DoD in Washington State, marks a significant milestone in enhancing health care access for Veterans in one of western Washington’s most geographically challenging island communities.

OAK HARBOR, WA – VA Puget Sound Health Care System is proud to announce the official opening of its new VA Puget Sound Clinic in Oak Harbor, developed in collaboration with Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and Naval Health Clinic Oak Harbor.

This partnership, a first-of-its-kind for the VA and DoD in Washington State, marks a significant milestone in enhancing health care access for Veterans in one of western Washington’s most geographically challenging island communities.

Located inside the Naval Health Clinic Oak Harbor on Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, the new VA Puget Sound Clinic in Oak Harbor will provide comprehensive primary care services, bringing much-needed resources closer to home for Veteran who previously faced significant travel barriers. This innovative collaboration between VA Puget Sound and the Department of Defense ensures a seamless and efficient approach to care, leveraging shared expertise and infrastructure to better serve the local Veteran community.

“Our VA Puget Sound Clinic in Oak Harbor is a testament to our commitment to providing Veterans with the care they deserve, no matter where they live,” said VA Puget Sound Executive Director Dr. Thomas Bundt. “For those living in areas like Whidbey Island and Oak Harbor, where access to services has been a challenge, our new clinic offers a lifeline to high-quality primary care.”

VA services include comprehensive primary care, social work, behavioral health, nutrition and clinical pharmacy specialists. While provider requested laboratory work or radiology procedures such as x-rays can be done at any VA Puget Sound health care facility with those services (such as our Everett or Mount Vernon clinics) or through the Community Care Network, the hope is to eventually offer those services in-house. The VA also hopes to make the Oak Harbor Clinic a tele hub which will expand Veterans’ access to specialty care services from tele retinal to tele dermatology.

“We are honored to partner with VA Puget Sound on this important initiative,” said Naval Health Clinic Oak Harbor Director Capt. Mark Lund. “Together, we are breaking down barriers and building a foundation for better health and well-being for those who have served our nation.”

The VA staff of four—a primary care physician, LPN, RN and MSA—will be able to eventually support up to 1,200 Veterans in the new clinic. With the opening of all new clinics, that will take time.

Veterans hoping to get their care at VA Puget Sound Clinic in Oak Harbor (3475 N Saratoga St., Building 993 Oak Harbor, WA 98278-8800) should discuss with their current primary care team. For those who are not enrolled, they contact VA Puget Sound’s Enrollment and Eligibility Office at 1.

VA Puget Sound provides comprehensive care to approximately 160,000 Veterans across the Pacific Northwest enrolled with a primary care team at one of its care sites: two main campuses (American Lake and Seattle), seven outpatient clinics (Everett, Mount Vernon, Oak Harbor, Olympia, Port Angeles, Puyallup and Silverdale) and two Community Resource & Referral Centers (Georgetown in Seattle and Renton).
