Six Months: Fredericksburg VA Health Care Center Surpasses 50,000 Patient Visits and Continues to Expand Staff

By Dennis Cohen Jr., Public Affairs Communication Project Manager
The Fredericksburg VA Health Care Center celebrated a major milestone this August, with more than 50,000 veteran appointments and 400 employees recruited since its opening in March, expanding access to care for Veterans residing in Spotsylvania County and surrounding communities.
Ron Johnson, Executive Director of the Central Virginia VA Health Care System, expressed enthusiasm about this development.
“In the last six months, we have increased our team to 408 providers and healthcare professionals, and have 235 more at various stages of recruitment, an amazing accomplishment when workforce shortages in the healthcare industry are felt across Virginia and the nation, he said. “Furthermore, the clinic has expanded access to vital health care services in Spotsylvania County and the surrounding communities, ensuring Veterans receive the comprehensive support they deserve.”
“Together, we have completed an outstanding 50,000 appointments in the last six months, an achievement that speaks to our staff’s dedication and our ongoing commitment to ensuring timely, high-quality care for those who served,” Johnson stated.
The Fredericksburg Health Care Center, which consolidated three VA community-based outpatient clinics earlier this year, is centrally located to help reduce travel burdens for Veterans and bring a full range of VA services closer to home for many Veterans.
Phase 2 Now Underway
The clinic is opening in a phased approach, gradually expanding services, and hiring staff to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality care at the facility.
As of August 2025, operations remain on track, and the clinic is currently in Phase 2 of its planned service expansion.
- Phase 1 brought online Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT), mental health services, podiatry, audiology, and key support services by March 2025.
- With Phase 2 underway, pharmacy and radiology services are already available. Additional specialty care, including dermatology, nephrology, cardiology, orthopedic surgery, and urology, as well as upcoming clinics for prosthetics, eye care, and dentistry, will be available by December 2025.
- Phase 3 will expand care, introducing advanced radiology (MRI and CT), neurology, rheumatology, oncology, spinal cord injury services, and a cardiovascular lab by May 2026.
- Phase 4 will follow up with the addition of surgical specialties, ambulatory surgery, gastrointestinal endoscopy, and sterile processing services by December 2026.
“The phased expansion of the Fredericksburg Health Care Center has demonstrated significant success in enhancing patient care and accessibility,” said Sandy Markert, Fredericksburg Assistant Director/HCC Administrator. “By strategically implementing each phase, we have effectively increased our capacity to serve more Veterans, improved our infrastructure, and integrated advanced medical technologies.”
