Honoring Love and Legacy Through the Last Tour Wish List Program

A heartfelt look at how the Last Tour Wish List program honored Navy Veteran Robert Wantz by fulfilling his final wish—a special dinner with his wife of 40 years.
At the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center, the Last Tour Wish List program provides compassionate, personalized experiences for Veterans receiving end‑of‑life care. Its mission is simple yet deeply meaningful: to bring comfort, joy, and closure by creating moments that reflect what matters most to each Veteran.
For U.S. Navy Veteran Robert Wantz, that moment was clear. Mr. Wantz served during the Korean Conflict as a radio/telegrapher aboard the USS Coral Sea, sending and receiving encrypted Morse Code. With trademark humor, he often said he “did his part to prevent the Communists from invading the Mediterranean Sea.” His service and spirit reflect the dedication of his generation.
When offered several options through the Last Tour Wish List program—such as contacting a favorite sports team, enjoying a special outing, or planning a meaningful activity—Mr. Wantz chose a final “special dinner” with his beloved wife of more than 40 years, Diana. His wish centered not on celebrating himself, but on honoring her.
Working closely with him, Recreation Therapist Heidi Nadobny helped craft every detail to match his vision. Mr. Wantz was provided several restaurant choices and menus, and with no budget restrictions, he and Mrs. Wantz selected their favorite meals. He preferred the remaining touches to be a surprise.
These experiences are made possible thanks to the efforts of Adam Haward‑Lupo, Chief of CDCE, who works with Veteran Service Organizations to secure donations for the program. As plans were finalized, Mr. Wantz made a few personal requests—most notably the music of Frank Sinatra. Heidi arranged the playlist and added thoughtful touches such as fresh flowers, soft lighting, battery‑operated candles, and optional formal attire.
On the day of the dinner, Heidi met privately with Mrs. Wantz before revealing the surprise. The room had been transformed into an intimate, elegant setting. The meal was presented with fine silverware and glassware to make the evening feel truly special.
When Mrs. Wantz entered, she was visibly moved. She later shared, “His wish was for one last date night, and he was overwhelmed preparing for it. The evening was very, very special, and I will never forget the look in his eyes when I entered the room.” The couple spent the evening sharing a beautiful meal, heartfelt conversation, and a moment of connection they deeply cherished.
Through the Last Tour Wish List program, Mr. Wantz’s final request became a celebration of love, service, and devotion. The program continues to honor Veterans by honoring what matters most to them.
Mrs. Wantz added a heartfelt message: “Dr. Michelle Scharnott, Geriatric/Palliative Care Physician, and Heidi, have put smiles on the faces of many Veterans in their last days. Their dedication to making a difference ensures that Veterans experience comfort, meaning, and exceptional care. Our family is truly grateful.”
