Danny Canup was appointed as the Acting Assistant Director at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner Salisbury VA Medical Center, effective June 14, 2025.
Danny J. Canup previously served as the Chief of Prosthetics and Sensory Aids at the Salisbury VA Health Care System, a role he has held since November 17, 2017. He is a proud U.S. Air Force veteran who served in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom as an Air Transportation Craftsman (Enlisted) under Air Mobility Command. In this role, he was responsible for managing and overseeing air transportation operations to ensure the safe and efficient movement of personnel, cargo, and supplies.
Danny began his military career with the Puerto Rico Air National Guard’s 156th Aerial Port Squadron. He later transitioned to the U.S. Air Force Reserve, where he served in several units across the country, including:
• 70th Aerial Port Squadron, Homestead AFB, Florida
• 62nd Aerial Port Squadron, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington
• 53rd Aerial Port Squadron, Pope AFB, North Carolina
• 71st Aerial Port Squadron, Langley AFB, Virginia
• 96th Aerial Port Squadron “Combat Hogs,” Little Rock AFB, Arkansas
On October 10, 2021, Danny was appointed Acting Chief of Supply Chain Management (SCM), a position he held until January 16, 2022, before returning to his current leadership role in Prosthetics.
He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with a minor in Human Resources from the University of Puerto Rico and a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Phoenix.
Danny began his VA career in September 2009 as a Veteran Service Representative (VSR) at the St. Petersburg VA Regional Office. He is a 2010 graduate of the Technical Career Field (TCF) Program in Prosthetics at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System. His extensive experience also includes roles at the Portland, Durham, and Memphis VA Medical Centers.
Notably, Mr. Canup led the successful initiative to re-establish Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) services at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner Salisbury VA Medical Center. His leadership resulted in the opening of a fully operational O&P lab in December 2022, enhancing access to timely, veteran-centered care.
A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mr. Canup brings a strong commitment to serving veterans, supported by his comprehensive background in military logistics and VA healthcare operations.
