Excellence in Nursing Education

PRESS RELEASE

July 10, 2024

San Francisco , CA — San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS) is proud to announce the recent Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation.

The accreditation of the nurse practitioner fellowship/residency programs in primary care and mental health at SFVAHCS highlights our enduring commitment to excellence in nursing education and practice.

CCNE ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate and graduate education programs preparing effective nurses. Officially recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a national accreditation agency, CCNE serves the public interest by assessing and identifying programs that engage in effective educational practices. CCNE is the nation’s leading accrediting agency for baccalaureate, masters, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs as well as post-baccalaureate nurse residency, post-graduate APRN certificates, and nurse practitioner fellowship/residency programs. An autonomous arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), CCNE serves the public interest by assessing and identifying programs that engage in effective educational practices. Accreditation by CCNE is an indication of confidence in the ability of the parent institution to offer a program of quality, deserving of public approbation.

The accredited nurse practitioner fellowship/residency programs in primary care and mental health will allow San Francisco VA to continue to offer specialized training and education to those who choose a career in nursing, those who play a pivotal role in the delivery of health care access and services to the Veterans we serve. In accordance with the CCNE Standards, programs are evaluated in four areas: mission and governance; institutional commitment and resources; curriculum and teaching-learning practices; and assessment and achievement of program outcomes.

As highly-valued members of our health care system, we are honored that the nurse practitioner fellowship/residency programs in primary care and mental health at San Francisco VA Health Care System is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org). This recognition is a testament to the Department of Veterans Affairs role in strengthening nursing confidence, competence, and retention to ensure that our nation's Veterans receive exceptional care.
