Gene Russell, Primary Photographer
Mr. Gene Russell serves as the primary photographer for the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. He is responsible for photographing the Secretary’s significant events as well as documenting leadership activities for a variety of uses. His accomplishments as a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) photographer include serving former VA Secretaries Robert McDonald, Dr. David Shulkin and the current VA Secretary, The Honorable Robert Wilkie. Acting Deputy Secretary Scott Blackburn, gave Mr. Russell the moniker of being “customer service obsessed.”
Mr. Russell honored Veterans in 20 cities, 14 states, as the principal photographer for the “I Am Not Invisible” (IANI) campaign. His photographs of more than 700 Women Veterans involved with the campaign were transmitted to a national audience. He was also honored for his customer service as well as best portrait and best of show for works created at the VA 2019 Medical Media Art Contest.
He provides unparalleled support to the Secretary’s Center for Strategic Partnership, by providing outstanding photographic support. His photographs from the 2018 Anywhere to Anywhere, Together Summit and VA’s partnership with Sanford Health, promoted the VA mission to a global audience of millions.
Prior to his service at VA, Mr. Russell owned portrait studios in Houston, Texas, and Northern Nevada. Mr. Russell served honorably with the 3rd Infantry Division in Wildflecken, Germany, and is a service-connected disabled U.S. Army Veteran.
