An introvert’s invitation for women to connect at POWW

By Kristina Miller, Public Affairs Officer
Know what it's like to go to an event and feel overwhelmed by the amount of people? Introverts definitely do. That’s me, Kristina, a Navy Veteran. Still, I have an invitation to share. (Remember this comes from someone who prefers the cozy corners of events, where genuine conversations happen.)
As women warriors, we have worn the uniform, carried the weight of service, and now move through civilian life with resilience, strength, but perhaps long for real connection. This invitation is for that—it’s a gathering about being seen and seeing others, plus quiet understanding and shared laughter.
Why I’m encouraging you to attend
As an introvert and a Veteran, I know how social events can feel both enticing and intimidating. There’s the promise of connection, but also the worry about small talk, crowded rooms, and the pressure to chat.
For many of us, the camaraderie of military life was both a haven and a challenge. We learned to stand together, but we also sometimes shrank into ourselves, carving out small spaces of solitude amid the bustle.
Women Veterans are unique. We have navigated spaces where our voices sometimes felt outnumbered, yet we rose to the occasion time and again. We’ve mastered the art of adapting, but sometimes we still feel isolated. However, when we gather, there’s an unspoken understanding that bridges us all. Whether you were active duty, reserves, or National Guard—regardless of your branch, rank, or role—your story is welcome. That’s why I invite you to this time and space created for you—a gentle, welcoming space—where our shared experiences as women Veterans can become the wellspring of new sisterly connection.
What to expect from this gathering
You don’t need to worry about “networking” because my teammates in both the Sheridan and Cheyenne VA Health Care Systems have created opportunities for you to take part in learning opportunities and activities to foster comfort, reflection, and authentic interaction.
This gathering is designed so you can participate in whatever way feels right to you. Whether you’re content to listen, eager to share, or simply want to feel the presence of others who “get it,” your way is the right way.
The main event is Saturday, Aug. 2, but there are also three activities Friday, Aug. 1, for anyone who can attend.
Here are your options for Friday:
Wyoming Veterans Memorial Museum tour – Casper is home to a great museum, so join other interested ladies in a tour set up by the Wyoming Veterans Commission.
Ben Patton Project - The Wyoming Veterans Commission has invited Ben, from The Patton Veterans Project, to provide an opportunity for you to create short films that express themes and experiences relevant to your service. Veterans who want to take part will watch a couple examples of other films made, then be broken into small groups to create a project which will be shown to the large group at the end.
Evening get-together - The Pink Berets, a nationally recognized organization for women military members and Veterans, are hosting this year's Friday evening get-together at the Casper Vet Center. This casual gathering will include light snacks and drinks.
Here are your options for Saturday:
- Broken in the Stronger Places with author Elizabeth Estabrooks
- DIY Mini Indoor Herb Garden with Olivia Feaster
- Gentle Yoga and Mindful Breathwork with Kim Nimmo
- Redefining Resilience: Moving Beyond ‘Just Push Through’ with Stephanie Gattas of The Pink Berets

A final thought: The power of gathering
Even if you’re an introvert like me, I want you to know: this gathering is for you. You won’t need to put on a brave face or fake extroversion. Come as you are, with all your beautifully quiet strengths and soft edges. I hope you’ll consider joining us—not because you feel you should, but because you sense there’s a space for you here. Come to laugh or to listen, to share or to simply be. Let’s build a little community, one quiet conversation at a time.
I look forward to meeting you.
Kristina
