On May 30, 2025, the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System proudly inaugurated its brand-new Hospice Cottage with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an open house. This facility emphasizes our unwavering commitment to providing the highest quality of comprehensive care for our Veterans.

“Although hospice care has been a service offered by the Sioux Falls VA, this new hospice cottage marks a significant advancement in our ability to deliver essential care in an environment specifically designed to provide a calming and supportive atmosphere for both Veterans and their families,” said Sarah McCabe, Acting Associate Chief of Nursing at the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System.

Spanning 10,000 square feet, the hospice cottage is crafted to be a warm and welcoming space that supports Veterans and their families during difficult times. Every detail of this cottage reflects our dedication to creating a space where both Veterans and their loved ones can find solace and comfort.

In addition to personalized care, Veterans will receive spiritual and emotional support tailored to their needs.

“The extensive experience of our hospice team is unmatched,” said McCabe.

The combined knowledge of the Sioux Falls VA hospice team ensures we are prepared to address any comfort needs around the clock, providing Veterans and their families with peace of mind knowing they are in capable and compassionate hands.

“Our staff is dedicated to delivering the care our Veterans deserve while honoring the unique journeys of each Veteran and their families,” said Sara Ackert, Executive Director of the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System.

The cottage includes 10 private rooms, empowering Veterans and their families to create a home-like environment.

Beyond the peaceful environment, the hospice cottage features amenities designed to enhance comfort and convenience. Common areas are available for families to gather, share stories, and support each other, while outdoor spaces offer opportunities for some fresh air.

“Our aim is to ensure that every Veteran experiences dignity and respect throughout their end-of-life journey,” Ackert added. “We recognize the importance of honoring their service by providing a nurturing environment that celebrates their life and legacy.”

With the opening of this hospice cottage, the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System not only enhances its capacity to deliver compassionate care but also reaffirms its commitment to serving those who have served. As Veterans navigate this final stage, they can do so with the knowledge that they are surrounded by a community devoted to their well-being and comfort.
