About SAVAHCS Research Services
The mission of the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) Research and Development Service is to promote, ensure regulatory compliance and support medical knowledge and clinical excellence through high quality biomedical research conducted by well-trained investigators in a safe and ethical environment that ensures compliance with optimal human subject protection and security and use of animals.
Research Determination
Research vs Non-Research determinations are now being managed by a separate web-based portal outside of VAIRRS/IRBNet. Submissions are reviewed by Associate Chief of Staff for Research and determinations are made very quickly. Please use SAVAHCS VAEDA to determine Research.
Institutional Biosafety Committee Information
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guidelines also state that upon request; the institution shall make available to the public all Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) meeting minutes and any documents submitted to or received from funding agencies which the latter are required to make available to the public.

The dedicated clinicians and staff at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) in Tucson, Arizona, can participate in research advancements and share in these advancements right here in Arizona. Like the VA, BREFSA’s goals are not motivated by financial gains; BREFSA’s mission is purely for the support of research at SAVAHCS and advancements in healthcare for Veterans in Southern Arizona.
