On Friday, January 30, 2026, the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of the new SAVAHCS chapel.
Acting SAVAHCS Associate Director Jenny Wasielewski opened the ceremony with heartfelt remarks, expressing her excitement and gratitude. Wasielewski highlighted the thoughtful planning and shared effort that went into creating the new chapel.
"Our new chapel has been a dream for years, but now it’s a reality. I'm honored to be a part of this ribbon-cutting ceremony," Wasielewski said.
The new chapel, located in Building 2, Room S100, near patient care areas, is a project that has been envisioned for years. Wasielewski commended the collaborative efforts that led to the creation of the tranquil space.
"Several of our departments came together to create this quiet space for reflection, prayer, and spiritual support," she said.
SAVAHCS Chaplain Troy Parson addressed the spiritual significance of the new chapel.
"A healthcare chapel is more than just a room," Parson said. "What makes this space sacred are the prayers and tears that will be shed here. People seek a place of comfort; it’s kind of like the building's heartbeat, a space to foster well-being and healing for the whole person."
Wasielewski recognized key contributors, acknowledging the expertise and dedication of the engineering and interior design teams.
"I'd like to recognize our engineering department, who expertly relocated several stained-glass windows and covered the original windows with desert film to create a serene environment," she said. "Our interior design team skillfully planned many of the decor items in the space to respect many diverse beliefs."
The ribbon-cutting ceremony concluded with a sense of joy and community. The attendees cheered with enthusiasm as the ribbon was cut, marking the official opening of the chapel.
Chaplain Parson closed the ceremony with an expression of gratitude for the teamwork and dedication that brought the chapel to life.
"In recognition of your outstanding commitment to the renovation efforts and the establishment of the SAVAHCS Chapel, your contributions are sincerely valued," he said.
In continuation of the celebrations, a ceremony for the consecration of the tabernacle chapel was held on Monday, February 2, officiated by Catholic Bishop Frederick Kicanas. This further solidified the chapel's role as a spiritual haven for the SAVAHCS community.
Bishop Kicanas stated that the new SAVAHCS Chapel will be a place where all patients, families, and VA staff can seek comfort, hope, and healing during times of distress.
The new SAVAHCS Chapel, a place of solace, is a testament to the commitment to meeting the needs of Veterans, their families, caregivers, and VA staff.
