SAVAHCS Launches Art Showcase to Combat Suicide and Promote Mental Wellness
The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System hosted its first Art of Healing - Suicide Prevention Art Showcase and Resource Fair Sept. 10 to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention through artistic expression.
Dan Cook, SAVAHCS' deputy chief of mental health, said the Art of Healing allows people to express emotions, noting suicide's impact extends far beyond the individual and their family. Attendees viewed art displays, engaged with community resources and learned about mental health support services for Veterans and families.
"Exhibits like this give Veterans the opportunity to speak through art and touch those affected by suicide," Cook said.
Air Force Veteran Lisa Suarez has been impacted by suicide multiple times. She lost a coworker to suicide in her 20s, which made her realize she knew nothing about warning signs or how to help. Years later, after her own mental health struggles, Suarez found therapy in beachcombing and turning seashells into art.
Local artist Jimmy Descant, from a military family, displayed two sculptures. One rocket ship represented "the ascension of injured soldiers beyond their pain," while another piece addressed soldiers who lost limbs, minds or hearts during war.
“If you do have a Vet in your life, check in with them and make sure they’re ok,” said Dr. Lucretia Vaughn, SAVAHCS chief of mental health. She acknowledged the dozen community partners attending play a vital role in reaching Veterans not enrolled in VA health care.
Project Action for Veterans program manager Denise Lopez said it was important to promote programs outside the VA that help veterans, because not all Veterans are enrolled in VA health care.
The Art of Healing initiative underscores SAVAHCS's commitment to healing veterans through art and fostering a supportive community.
