Each year, the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS), in partnership with Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (DMAFB), honors the brave men and women who have served as prisoners of war (POWs) or are still missing in action (MIAs).

This annual ceremony is a heartfelt tribute to their unwavering commitment and service to our country.

This year's solemn event was hosted by the Pima Air and Space Museum, a venue rich in history and fitting backdrop for such a commemoration. SAVAHCS Interim Director Maria Nguyen opened the ceremony with emotional remarks, expressing deep gratitude for the sacrifices made by our POWs and MIAs.

"It is an honor to be at the Pima Air and Space Museum to observe National POW/MIA Recognition Day," said Nguyen. "Approximately 81,000 American service members remain missing after serving in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and other conflicts involving the U.S. It is our nation’s vow and sacred duty to never stop searching, never give up hope, and never stop working to bring our missing home."

The highlight of the ceremony was a moving address by a former prisoner of war, Harvey Horn. “Flying isn’t dangerous. Crashing is,” Mr. Horn joked.

His powerful story of courage and triumph brought a profound sense of reality to the attendees gathered. His recounting of the trials he faced and the hope and strength that carried him through captivated everyone present.

“I stand here today, not just as a survivor, but as a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit,” Mr. Horn shared. “Let us continue to honor the memory of those who remain missing and provide support and gratitude to those who have endured and overcome.”

Following Mr. Horne, DMAFB Commander Colonel Jose Cabrera took the stage. Colonel Cabrera spoke of the continued dedication of the military community to remembering and honoring the sacrifices of POWs and MIAs.

His words resonated with the audience, reinforcing the shared commitment to never forget those who have served.

"So, as we close the ceremony, I just want to tell you that I never thought that I would have to follow somebody like you Harvey. 101 years old, a prisoner of war, a member of America's greatest generation, an American hero who fought pure evil and you lived through it. To share your story. Not only will you inspire all of us to continue service, but you are living proof that we truly stand on the shoulders of giants," said Colonel Cabrera.

The ceremony concluded with two standing ovations for Mr. Horn. Allowing all in attendance to reflect on the sacrifices made and the enduring legacy of commitment to the country demonstrated by Mr. Horn and other POWs and MIAs.

As the Southern Arizona community paid tribute, the event served as a powerful reminder of the courage, resilience, and unconquerable spirit of our nation’s heroes. The SAVAHCS and DMAFB's continued dedication to honoring these individuals ensures their memory and sacrifices are forever recognized.
