By Orlando Ford, Public Affairs Specialist
The Tucson VET Center honored a remarkable milestone, celebrating the 102nd birthday of Harvey Horn, a former World War II prisoner of war and previous volunteer at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System.
Veterans and staff gathered to commemorate the historic life and service of one of the nation’s revered heroes. Horn's life is a testament to resilience and dedication.
As a POW during World War II, he endured unimaginable hardships, yet his spirit remained unbroken. The celebration was not just a birthday party; it was a tribute to the sacrifices made by Horn and his fellow soldiers in their fight for freedom and peace.
The closed knit gathering offered heartfelt comments paying homage to Horn's courage and contribution to the country. There was a palpable sense of gratitude and admiration in the air as people of all ages gathered to honor Horn's legacy.
In a brief but touching address, Horn, with his characteristically humble demeanor, reflected on his experiences and expressed his appreciation for the support he has received over the years. " It's been a joy and true, true joy. And you guys, have made a big difference in my life, so I thank you," he said. "It's an honor to be remembered and celebrated in such a way."
Reflecting on his journey, he added, "Look forward. Don't look back and say it may not be in your hands. I just hope that all you guys with PTSD you're able to handle it. I don't think it disappears. I really don't. But you get to see the signs, and you learn how to handle them. At least that's been my experience."
The event served as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of World War II Veterans and the enduring gratitude of a nation that continues to benefit from their sacrifices. Horn continues to share his message of resilience and hope as a POW to the community and young services members during speaking engagements.
The Tucson VET Center provides support and resources for Veterans, organized this special occasion as part of its ongoing mission to honor and celebrate those who have served.
