Veteran Champion Buzz Hickox Soars as Top Peer Support Specialist

Robert "Buzz" Hickox, a dedicated Peer Support Specialist at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS), has been named the VISN 22 Peer Support Specialist (PSS) of the Year.
This prestigious recognition highlights Hickox's outstanding contributions to Veteran care for SAVAHCS and Tucson Veterans.
“Being recognized for all your hard work is gratifying,” said Hickox. “But being nominated nationally is something that I never expected.” He also humbly thanked the staff who nominated him and acknowledged those who witnessed his extra efforts as Lead PSS.
As a PSS, Hickox draws from his own experiences to connect with and assist fellow veterans.
“I cherish my role in helping Veterans improve their lives,” said Hickox. “As a fellow Veteran, I understand their challenges and good days. Peer Support offers companionship, not charity.”
Whether counseling individuals, leading groups, or training other peer specialists, serving Veterans is Hickox’s most fulfilling mission. His dedication to helping others navigate the challenges of recovery and reintegration has set him apart in his field. Colleagues and veterans alike praise Hickox for his empathy, knowledge, and unwavering support.
“It’s a testament to his exemplary service and the positive impact he has made on the lives of Veterans”, said Dr. Lucy Vaughn, SAVAHCS Chief of Mental Health Services.
Hickox was nominated by several staff members, but it was the nomination from the Fisher House Manager, Mike Ramsey, that won over the Selection Committee. This recognition not only honors Hickox's individual achievements but also shines a spotlight on the vital work being done at SAVAHCS to support veterans' mental health and overall well-being. The nomination for the national award puts Hickox in contention with top-performing PSSs from across the country.
“If I am chosen as the VHA Peer of the Year, it would be the pinnacle to my career as a VA peer specialist,” he said. and a great beginning to the next chapter of my life working with Veterans.
While the SAVAHCS community celebrates this achievement and are hopeful that Hickox will bring home the national title, we are happy that he’s recognized for his dedication and service have already made a significant difference in the lives of countless Veterans in Southern Arizona and beyond.
