Las Vegas , NV — VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System is proud to announce that Jack Ford has been awarded the Department of Veteran Affairs’ Volunteer of the Year award, recognizing his remarkable dedication to Veterans for nearly 24 years.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. —VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System is proud to announce that Jack Ford has been awarded the Department of Veteran Affairs’ Volunteer of the Year award, recognizing his remarkable dedication to Veterans for nearly 24 years. At 94 years young, Ford continues to embody the spirit of selflessness and commitment that defines the VA's mission.

Ford's journey began during World War II when he briefly served as a parachute rigger in the U.S. Army Air Corps, a role cut short when it was discovered he was only 15 years old. Undeterred, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy when he came of age, where he served as an air traffic controller during the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer.

Today, Jack serves as a Red Coat Ambassador at the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center, a role that sees him actively supporting Veteran patients and their families. Twice a week, he walks 12,000-15,000 steps throughout the medical center, helping guide Veterans to appointments and essential services such as enrollment, pharmacy, and radiology.

He is also a member of the Veteran & Family Advisory Committee, an American Legion Representative for the VA Voluntary Service Committee and has served as the past American Legion Department Commander for the State of Nevada.

"Nobody understands ‘going the extra mile’ better than Jack," said Robert Johnson, Chief of VASNHS Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE). “Jack has given a lifetime of service to his country as a Veteran and as a VA volunteer. He is well known by many throughout our VA medical center.”

Jack’s commitment doesn’t stop at providing directions. He takes the initiative to find answers for Veterans and their caregivers, ensuring they receive the support they need. His early arrival and unwavering optimism set a positive tone for everyone he encounters.

“Jack takes immense pride in his role as a Red Coat Ambassador,” said Johnson. “His selfless devotion reflects the VA's ICARE core values—Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence.”

As a vital member of the VA family, Jack Ford’s contributions extend far beyond volunteer hours. He represents the pride and passion necessary to deliver the highest level of care and service to Veterans. His legacy of service continues to inspire both current and future generations of Veterans and volunteers.
