At 90 years old, Air Force Veteran Edmond Xavier Ramirez, Sr. continues to demonstrate that a fulfilling life is built on curiosity, resilience, and passion. Despite facing significant challenges, including a dramatic transition from millionaire status to living on his Veteran benefits, Ramirez approaches each day with purpose and optimism.

A visit to his modest one-bedroom apartment reveals a life rich with experiences and interests. Family photographs and cherished memories fill his dining room, while his kitchen reflects his love of cooking, stocked with favorite ingredients and cookware for preparing elaborate dinners. On his balcony, he nurtures fruit trees and plants, growing blood oranges, grapefruit, limes, and soon, cherries.

Ramirez’s creativity is equally evident throughout his home. An easel and electric piano occupy his living room, and his bookshelves hold everything from cookbooks and classic literature to a bound, unpublished book chronicling his life through both fact and fiction. Writing has become a source of comfort and reflection, helping him navigate life’s challenges.

His passion for golf remains strong despite physical limitations that have kept him off the course for years. He has worked with his Patient-Aligned Care Team at VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System to get back on the links. After dedicated physical therapy and treatments with VASNHS to improve his hand strength, he recently returned to a driving range. Not only was he able to hit the ball again, but he quickly slipped back into his role as a teacher, offering advice and lessons to another golfer. His love of teaching, developed over years as a golf instructor, remains as strong as ever.

His journey has inspired many of those who have met him, including his providers at VASNHS. “He envelopes the Whole Health philosophy without even knowing it,” said Katherine Sterrett, VASNHS case manager. “I call him the Renaissance man due to how he lives life in many directions, spherically. His enthusiasm is contagious and inspirational.”

An entrepreneur at heart, Mr. Ramirez is already planning his next adventure: opening a French restaurant. He has thoughtfully developed the menu, décor, and business plan, proving that ambition has no age limit.

Throughout his life, Mr. Ramirez has worn many hats. He has built cars, flown planes, traveled the world, spoken multiple languages, and played several musical instruments. Yet, above all else, family remains his greatest treasure. He is proud of his surviving son and daughter, as well as his grandchildren, who continue to bring meaning and joy to his life.

Mr. Ramirez’s story offers a powerful lesson in whole health and well-being. His example reminds us that regardless of age or circumstance, we can continue to learn, create, dream, and pursue what inspires us.
