Primary care

Advice nurse

Talk with an advice nurse if you have questions about your care or for help in deciding whether you need an urgent or routine appointment.

The registered nurses on our Nurse Advice Line provide you and your family with helpful medical advice and free, confidential answers to many of your health care questions. Call anytime. We’re here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, our nurses can:

  • Help you manage many of your basic health care needs
  • Answer questions about your current medications or medical condition
  • Discuss your health care concerns and help you decide the best way to handle them
  • Offer improved access to VA services

Emergency care

In an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest VA or non-VA emergency department. We provide immediate treatment for serious, life-threatening health emergencies such as severe chest pain, seizures, heavy uncontrollable bleeding or moderate to severe burns.

Tampa VA Emergency Department is open 24/7, 365 days a year.

Geriatrics

Our specialists offer reproductive health care services for women Veterans, including contraception, pregnancy care and fertility treatment.

Primary care

Your VA primary care provider will work closely with you to plan for all the care you need to stay healthy and well throughout your life, including immunizations and vaccinations. They will also work with family members or caregivers who support you.

If you’re struggling with issues like PTSD, depression, grief, anger or trauma, we offer counseling and other support. All VA health care facilities offer same-day help. You may qualify even without enrolling in VA health care.

Audiology and speech

Cardiology

We perform noninvasive and minimally invasive tests and procedures that check, support, and improve your heart health. We’ll work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan and treat you with the most effective medications. Our services include:

Pulmonary medicine

Common conditions: tuberculosis, respiratory conditions, sleep apnea, sleep problems

Our pulmonary medicine team treats diseases and conditions that affect the lungs and breathing, including asthma, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute respiratory distress syndrome and sleep apnea.

Radiation oncologists specialize in using high-energy radiation to kill or damage cancer cells and either destroy tumors or control their growth. Our doctors sometimes use radiation therapy in combination with surgery, chemotherapy, or other cancer treatments. The radiation therapy you receive will depend on cancer type, tumor size and location, and your general health. Our services include:

  • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), which uses computers to deliver precise radiation doses that match the 3D shape of your tumor
  • Intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), which uses targeted radiation to treat a brain tumor or lesion while minimizing radiation effects on healthy brain tissue
  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), which uses precisely focused radiation to treat tumors in your lungs, spine, liver, lymph nodes, or other soft tissues
  • Low-dose rate definitive and salvage brachytherapy, which use low doses of radiation to treat prostrate cancer
  • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), which uses detailed images to help focus radiation on affected areas, improve outcomes, and shorten treatment

Toxic exposure screening

Common conditions: War-related exposure, open burn pit exposure, airborne hazards exposure, Gulf War-related exposure, Gulf War Illness, Agent Orange exposure, radiation exposure, Camp Lejeune contaminated water exposure
We provide a quick screening to identify toxins you may have come in contact with during your military service. The screening takes 5 to 10 minutes. During the screening, we’ll ask you questions and document your responses in your medical record. Your answers will inform your VA health care team of any possible exposures. We’ll also connect you to more resources if you have any concerns.

Toxic Exposure Screening at Tampa VA

Tampa VA is committed to providing screening, health care and resources to Veterans with toxic exposure concerns associated with their military service.

While toxic exposure is defined by law, generally there are several types of possible exposures or hazards Veterans may have experienced during their military service. Some common examples appear below.

Open Burn Pits/Airborne Hazards: Contaminants or substances in the air including smoke and fumes from open burn pits and fine particulate matter.

Gulf War-related Exposures: Veterans may have been exposed to a variety of environmental hazards including pesticides and oil well fires.

Agent Orange: An herbicide used to thin-out thick foliage commonly found in jungles and fields.

Radiation: Exposure from sources such as nuclear weapons.

Camp LeJeune Contaminated Water Exposure: Between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987, Veterans and their families may have been exposed to contaminated drinking water.

Other Exposures: There are other potential toxic exposures that may occur during military service.

Registry exams

If you were exposed to toxic chemicals or other hazards during your military service, we offer you a free exam. This exam helps you identify potential health risks and helps us monitor issues so we can better serve you.

This free, voluntary, and comprehensive health exam involves an exposure and medical history, laboratory tests, and a physical exam. We will discuss your results in a face-to-face meeting and follow up with a letter. The registry evaluation, which does not verify exposure, is separate from VA’s disability compensation process. You may be eligible to participate in one or more of these health registries if you served during these time periods:

  • Ionizing radiation (1940s to 1960s)
  • Agent Orange (1960s and 1970s)
  • Airborne hazards and open burn pit (1990s to present)

Travel reimbursement

The Thrive Program - This 14-week program guides Veterans toward improved health, resiliency,  and redefined passions through the identification of values and alignment through healthy, positive actions that lead to purpose and finding fulfillment in life. The program includes the following two-hour sessions, which can be delivered face-to-face or virtually, over the course of 14 weeks:

  1. Orientation: Understand the three tenets of Positive Psychology, Whole Health, and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy
  2. Sleep and Restoration: Learn about the importance of sleep, in regards to their health, through education about common sleep disorders and holistic approaches for restful nights.
  3. Intuitive Eating: Explore mindful eating exercises and the benefits of nutrition, with details on diet culture and ways to foster and maintain healthy eating habits.
  4. Mental Health and Happiness: Discover new skills based on Positive Psychology with studies about Happiness.
  5. Financial Health: Identify personal values associated with financial health and discover your financial personality type.
  6. Stress Reduction: Learn the signs and symptoms of acute and chronic stress and how to effectively manage and reduce stress in your life.
  7. Environmental Health: Reflect on your personal environment; assess and align individual surroundings to personal values and individual needs.
  8. Healthy Relationships: Explore current relationships, identify your support system, and understand the importance of self-care and self-compassion.
  9. Creativity and Flow: Discover options for creativity while exploring relationships incorporating creative activities.
  10. Sexual Health: Increase your understanding on sexual health and explore individual how individual values support whole health.
  11. Mindfulness and Intuition: Learn about mindfulness history, skills, and efficacy.
  12. Spiritual Health: Explore your spirituality and values.
  13. Work Life Purpose: Complete activities to identify individual life purpose and goals.
  14. Wrap Up: Reflect on the Thrive journey; plan new goals and objectives that inspire and motivate you to improve on your whole health journey moving forward.
