BRAVE Program Celebrates Peer Day with Inspiring Testimonials and Gourmet Cuisine supplied by Nutrition and Food Services

Impact through Nourishment

Tampa, FL (September 15, 2025) – Last Monday was an uplifting day at the Domiciliary as the BRAVE program hosted its annual Peer Day, an event established to bring together graduates and current residents of the program for an exchange of stories, support, and insights.

Between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., approximately 40 Veterans gathered to listen to former program participants share their personal journeys of struggle, triumph, and adaptation to life outside the program.

The BRAVE (Building Recovery and Achieving Veterans Empowerment) program, activated in 2024, focuses on providing residential Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment for Veterans affiliated with the James A. Haley VA Medical Center. The program’s 45-60 day residential treatment is backed by a dedicated interdisciplinary team with a mission to help Veterans achieve and sustain sobriety within their communities. Since its inception, BRAVE has supported over 170 Veterans, many of whom have demonstrated remarkable progress and long-term sobriety.

Shared Experience

Peer Day was a testament to the power of shared experience and community. Graduates returned to speak with current residents, discussing their highlights and challenges, and offering valuable advice on adjusting to life after the program. One graduate reminisced about the excellent food provided during their time in the program, while another expressed gratitude to Jesse Lemoon, a Dietitian, who taught him how to read food labels—a skill that made a significant impact on his daily life.

In addition to the heartfelt stories, the event featured a gourmet spread of finger foods arranged by the Nutrition and Food Services team. Jaika Reynaud, a Cook Supervisor, who graciously arrived early to set up the beautiful decor, and Patricia Hubbard-Bell, a Cook Supervisor, who prepared homemade hummus, were instrumental in ensuring the event’s success. The selection also included a variety of cold and hot mini sandwiches and cookies, all of which were thoroughly enjoyed by the attendees.

The peer panel provided a much-needed dose of inspiration and hope. "It was truly inspiring to see graduates of the BRAVE program return to share messages of hope with current residents," reflected Alyson Josepher, a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor and art therapist. "As the art therapist, it warmed my heart to see Veterans continuing to incorporate art into their recovery even after completing the program. They encouraged others to fully engage and take advantage of everything the program has to offer. As a team, we're committed to providing a variety of recovery pathways to support each Veteran's unique journey."

"This event was a reminder of the power of lived experience," echoed George Serrano Martinez, a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist and Navy Veteran. "As a Veteran and staff member, hearing your fellow brothers and sisters express the value of this amazing program, and how it has changed their lives, I can only feel pride of being part of the team. It highlighted the importance of camaraderie, relationships, the knowledge learned and the therapists' ability to connect with Veterans. Empowering past Veterans with sharing their stories creates resilience and motivates current Veterans to see that success is achievable."

The heartfelt testimonials resonated deeply with the staff and residents. "My favorite part of the peer panel is seeing how the Veterans’ lives have changed since discharging," shared Allison Buenaga, a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor. "Hearing them talk about their improved relationships with their children and families is something that is immeasurable. It is truly amazing to see them living a life they are proud of and excited for."

Impact through Nourishment

"The peer panel was extraordinarily inspiring, offering firsthand insights and encouragement that deeply resonated with everyone present," remarked Julia Pearson, Section Chief of Nutrition and Food Services (NFS). "It was moving to hear the impact our nutrition and food services department has made. We know proper nourishment supports both physical health and mental clarity, so seeing them fully engaged and excited to continue learning more was inspirational. The support system that we have built as a team is amazing and I’m proud to be a small part of it.”
