Operation Helping Hand of Tampa hosted its annual holiday dinner to honor Veterans and active-duty service members receiving treatment at the Spinal Cord Injury and Poly-Trauma Centers at James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital.
The evening, steeped in gratitude and respect, served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve our country.
“Your sacrifices remind us that freedom is not free; it comes with the highest of costs,” said Douglas Fishman, President of Operation Helping Hand. “It is earned by those who put the needs of our country before the needs of themselves. And for that, we owe you not only our gratitude but our unwavering support.”
Fishman’s heartfelt speech underscored the purpose of the evening: to recognize the courage and determination of the Veterans and active-duty service members as they navigate recovery. He also expressed deep appreciation for the community support that makes Operation Helping Hand’s mission possible.
The interim Medical Center Director of James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital David J. VanMeter added his sentiments, emphasizing the importance of community and support. “It’s the love and care that transforms food into a meal,” he said. “What makes our medical center special are the people who choose to be here, making miracles happen every day.”
Operation Helping Hand, formed in the wake of 9/11, has been pivotal in supporting Veterans returning from Iraq, Afghanistan, and other military operations. The organization’s efforts have been bolstered by the generosity of sponsors, volunteers, and the broader Tampa community. Their commitment has provided crucial resources, such as meals and lodging, which have made significant differences in the lives of these heroes and their families.
“Without Operation Helping Hand, the donors, and the great city of Tampa, most of the successes we’ve shared would not happen,” noted Dr. Steven Scott, Chief of PMRS & PM&R at the hospital.
As the evening progressed, reflections on patriotism and mutual service were prevalent. The event highlighted how the community embodies American values by standing behind those who have stood for the nation. The holiday season’s spirit was evident as everyone came together to offer support, love, and a sense of belonging to those who need it most.
The holiday dinner wasn’t just about enjoying a meal; it was a manifestation of the care and community that Operation Helping Hand and its supporters have cultivated over the years. It was a night of warmth, hope, and renewed purpose, setting the tone for continued support and gratitude throughout the year.
“Active duty servicemembers and Veterans serve our country, and we’re here to serve you,” the interim Medical Center Director concluded. “Thank you all for being here and showing what true patriotism looks like—service to those who have served.”
