JAHVH, Rough Riders Honor Service by Serving Thanksgiving Meals

The aroma of roasted turkey and pumpkin pie filled the air in James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, replacing the sterile scent of antiseptic with the warmth of Thanksgiving.
Instead of the usual hurried footsteps and the murmur of conversations in the hallways, laughter and the clatter of trays echoed through the wards as members of the Rough Riders, 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, teamed up with JAHVH and dished out Thanksgiving meals with a side of camaraderie.
These modern-day cavalrymen replaced their boots and spurs with aprons and smiles while bringing a touch of home to Veterans spending the holiday away from their families.
“We take immense pride in giving back to our Veterans, their families, and the dedicated staff members who care for them,” said Greg Eckley, president of the Rough Riders, 1st U.S. Volunteer Calvary Regiment.
Joining the legendary Rough Riders in serving meals was the executive director of the hospital, David Dunning.
"We are incredibly proud to partner with the Rough Riders to serve a special meal to our Veterans," said Dunning. “It’s an honor to show our appreciation in this way reminding us of the importance of community.”
One such Veteran who received a warm meal was Charles Alston, an Air Force Veteran who resides in the Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Hospital.
“Thankful for the Rough Riders and for anybody that doesn’t forget us – especially on holidays. They have families of their own.” said Alston. “Food was good, too.”
As the last plates were cleared and everything ended, the sense of appreciation lingered in the air.
“The cherished tradition, which we’ve upheld since 2013, is a heartfelt way for us to express our gratitude to those who have served our nation,” said Eckley.
The JAHVH provides healthcare services to veterans in the Tampa Bay area. In addition to medical care, the hospital offers programs and events aimed at fostering a sense of community and well-being for veterans.
