James A Haley Veterans Hospital honors Larry Martin - US Army - Final Mile Salute and Escort

In a moving tribute to honor the life and service of Veteran Larry Eugene Martin, the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Florida, held a Final Mile salute and escort on August 5th, 2025.
This special ceremony was a testament to the commitment of the hospital, community members, and Veteran organizations to ensure that every Veteran receives the respect and recognition they deserve, even if they pass away without known next of kin.
Larry Eugene Martin was an honorably discharged Army Veteran who dedicated a significant portion of his life to his country. Born in a small town, he felt a deep sense of duty and enlisted in the United States Army on July 10, 1964. His years of service were marked by courage and resilience, particularly during his time in Vietnam. From July 18, 1965, to April 17, 1967.
After his honorable discharge on April 17, 1967, Mr. Martin made his home in Lakeland, Florida. Though he led a quiet life, his contributions to the nation's security and freedom were never forgotten.
“The Final Mile program at James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital was established to honor Veterans, like Mr. Martin, ensuring they receive a dignified burial and a final salute, “ said VA Policeman Payne.
This program brings together community members, Veteran organizations like the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA), and VA staff to provide a heartfelt memorial service and escort for Veterans who pass away without known next of kin. The goal is to ensure that these heroes are not buried alone and that their service is remembered and honored.
On August 5th, 2025, the hospital's chapel was filled with somber respect and gratitude as Veterans, hospital staff, and community members gathered to pay their final respects to Mr. Martin. The ceremony began with a solemn procession led by members of the CVMA, their motorcycles roaring in unison as a symbol of solidarity and respect. The American flag was draped over Mr. Martin's casket.
A military chaplain presided over the service, offering prayers and words of gratitude for Mr. Martin's service. The chaplain spoke of the sacrifices made by Mr. Martin and countless other Veterans who have served in the armed forces, emphasizing the importance of remembering and honoring their contributions.
Following the service, the Final Mile escort commenced. Hillsborough County Sherrif’s office, VA Police, staff, CVMA members, and community volunteers formed a convoy, accompanying Mr. Martin's casket on its journey to the Florida National Cemetery. Along the route, salutes were given by onlookers who had come out to pay their respects.
Upon arrival at the cemetery, a final salute was rendered, and taps were played, echoing through the silent, hallowed grounds. The presence of so many grateful individuals ensured that Mr. Martin was not buried alone but surrounded by a community that recognized and honored his service.

In honoring Larry Eugene Martin, the community reaffirmed its commitment to remembering and appreciating the service of all who have served.
