In observance of National Volunteer Week, the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) is spotlighting Gary Richmond.

Richmond is a retired Army Lt. Colonel who served as a finance officer from 1976-1996. He completed tours in Korea, Germany, Turkey, and New York City.

Richmond was born in Smyrna, Tennessee. He graduated from Smyrna High School in 1972. He attended MTSU and graduated in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He received his  master’s from Syracuse University in 1984 in governmental controller. He has been married to his wife Lin for 21 years.

Richmond started his volunteer career for TVHS on January 12, 1999 and has received 12,915 hours. He is the face of CDCE at the Alvin C. York campus greeting and assisting Veterans, visitors, and employees with a smile. One interesting fact about him is his father Clyde was long time resident at TVHS and lived to be 101 years old.

Richmond was one of the first volunteers to return to volunteering  during the COVID-19 pandemic. His smile and energy brighten up the day for Veterans, visitors, and staff.  He is true example of hero and volunteer.

TVHS is looking for volunteers to serve America's heroes. Contact the TVHS Center for Development and Civic Engagement at 615-873-8567 or visit www.volunteer.va.gov to get started.
