Centenarian Recognition Ceremony Honoring Veteran Mr. Donald "Don" Sleeter

By Bryan Prahl, Associate Director
On February 1, 2026, I had the distinct honor of participating in a heartwarming ceremony at the VFW in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, to celebrate the 100th birthday of Mr. Donald "Don" Sleeter.
Mr. Sleeter is a proud World War II Marine Corps Veteran who served valiantly on Iwo Jima and Guam. This momentous occasion marked his recognition as the Tomah VA Medical Center's 32nd Centenarian.
The Centenarian Program is a prestigious initiative designed to honor our American heroes who have reached the remarkable milestone of 100 years. Originally established by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie in November 2020, this noble project has been upheld and continued by VA Secretaries Denis McDonough and, currently, Doug Collins. The Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) has been instrumental in coordinating these significant celebrations, recognizing well over 1,000 centenarians and numerous Veterans nearing their 100th birthday across the nation.
During the ceremony, it was my privilege as the Tomah VA Medical Center’s Associate Director to present Mr. Sleeter with a framed, hand-signed letter of appreciation from the Secretary of the VA. I also had the pleasure of presenting him with a special VA challenge coin, both symbols of the nation's profound gratitude for his service and sacrifice.
After his honorable service in the Marine Corps, Mr. Sleeter utilized the GI Bill to pursue an education in electrical work. He then embarked on a career with the Marshfield Police Department, serving with distinction and climbing his way up through the ranks to eventually retire from the Department of Emergency Management and Highway Safety Office. Mr. Sleeter's legacy of service continued through his five sons, all of whom followed in their father's footsteps to become police officers at various points in their lives.
Outside of his professional achievements, Mr. Sleeter is known for his hobbies of fishing and square dancing, activities that have brought him joy throughout the years.
As friends, family, and fellow Veterans gathered to celebrate this extraordinary milestone, the admiration and respect for Mr. Sleeter were evident. His remarkable journey from the battlefields of World War II to a full, vibrant century of life stands as an inspiring testament to the enduring spirit and dedication of our Veterans. It was a tremendous honor to be part of this celebration and to recognize the incredible contributions of Mr. Sleeter to our nation.
