Grilling Up Gratitude: A Community’s Gift to Tomah VA Veterans

By Christie Clark, Public Affairs Officer
Veterans at Tomah VA Medical Center were served up a generous helping of community spirit when local partners donated new grills and accessories to enhance future gatherings and camaraderie.
On May 12, 2026, a remarkable act of kindness unfolded at the Tomah VA Medical Center. Ken Schoolcraft, the hospital representative from the American Legion, joined by caring members of Rome American Legion Post 65, and the generous owners of Adams Ace Hardware and 1776 Outdoors, delivered two Blackstone flattop grills, covers, and accessories. These gifts, donated by Adams Ace Hardware and 1776 Outdoors, were received by Jennifer Conzemius, Chief of the Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE), who oversees all donations for the facility.
The story began when Jennifer Conzemius reached out to Ken Schoolcraft with a simple request: a donation to replace current aged grills for Veterans’ events. Inspired by her request, Ken shared the vision at the April 2026 American Legion District meeting, where Rome American Legion Post 65 immediately offered their support. Through thoughtful collaboration, CDCE, Ken, Legion members, Adams Ace Hardware, and 1776 Outdoors worked together, resulting in each business donating a Blackstone flattop grill. American The Legion Post 65 further enriched the donation by contributing covers, accessory kits, and seasonings.
These items will transform outdoor grilling events for Tomah VA Veterans—helping them step outside their rooms, connect with staff and fellow Veterans, and create lasting memories through camaraderie and delicious food.
A heartfelt thank you to Ken Schoolcraft, Rome American Legion Post 65, Adams Ace Hardware, and 1776 Outdoors, for your hard work and generous donation. You have made an incredible difference in the lives of Veterans, bringing joy and a sense of community to those who have bravely served.
