I Didn’t Know Where to Turn—Until I Found RRTP

Tomah VA Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program.

By Amanda Batchko, Public Affairs Specialist/Outreach Coordinator

At the Tomah VA Medical Center, veterans like John are finding hope and healing through the Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP), a of safety and of support that transforms lives and rekindles their sense of purpose.

John sat in his truck, engine off, staring at the faint glow of his porch light. His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white. “Why can’t I just go inside?” he thought. “It’s my home. It’s supposed to feel safe.”
But it didn’t. The silence inside those walls was louder than any battlefield. Every creak of the floorboards reminded him of nights overseas—nights when danger lurked in the dark. Sleep was a stranger now. And when it came, nightmares followed.
He rubbed his eyes, exhausted. “I should be stronger than this. I made it through war. Why can’t I make it through a Tuesday night?” The shame was heavy, pressing down like armor he couldn’t take off.

The next morning, after another night of staring at the ceiling, John called a buddy.
“Man, I don’t know what to do anymore,” he admitted, voice cracking.
His friend didn’t hesitate. “Have you heard about RRTP at Tomah VA? They helped me turn things around. You should check it out.”
John stared at the phone long after the call ended. Treatment? Living somewhere else? It sounded overwhelming. But something inside whispered: You can’t keep doing this alone.

Walking through the doors of the Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP) at Tomah VA Medical Center, John felt his chest tighten. “What if they judge me? What if they think I’m weak?”
Instead, a staff member smiled warmly. “Welcome home,” she said. Two simple words—and for the first time in years, John felt like maybe he belonged somewhere.
RRTP wasn’t what he expected. It wasn’t sterile or cold. It was a place where Veterans could breathe again. A place where healing wasn’t just a word, it was a plan.

In group therapy, John spoke for the first time.
“I thought I was the only one,” he said quietly.
A fellow Veteran leaned forward. “Not even close,” he replied with a grin. “We’ve all been there. And we’re getting through it—together.”
Those words stuck with John. Together. For so long, he had carried his pain alone. Now, he had people who understood—people who didn’t just listen but truly got it.

At RRTP, John found:

24/7 support from people who cared.
Individualized treatment plans for mental health and substance use recovery.
Life skills training to prepare for a better future.
Wellness programs—fitness, mindfulness, nutrition—that helped him feel whole again.

Slowly, the weight lifted. John learned new coping strategies. He laughed again. He started to believe in tomorrow.
Today, John is living a healthier, more fulfilling life. And he wants other Veterans to know:
“You don’t have to fight this battle alone. RRTP gave me hope—and it can do the same for you.”
