By Christie Clark, Public Affairs Officer
On a sun-drenched May morning at the Tomah VA pond, the spirit of service and community soared—casting a ripple of joy across the waters—as Veterans and middle school volunteers united for an unforgettable fishing tournament, fueled by partnership, compassion, and a shared love of the outdoors.
The morning of May 20, 2026, dawned with the promise of sunshine and laughter at the Tomah VA pond. The Tomah VA Annual Fishing Tournament was set to welcome dozens of Community Living Center and Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program. Veterans, eager to enjoy a day of recreation, connection, and cherished tradition. This annual event highlights the Medical Center’s dedication to enriching the patient experience and helping inpatient Veterans reconnect with hobbies they’ve always loved. Our deep gratitude goes to our valued partners at the Genoa National Fish Hatchery, who generously stocked the campus pond just two weeks prior with 500 stunning rainbow trout—each averaging an impressive 11 inches—alongside a vibrant mix of channel catfish, bluegill, largemouth bass, yellow perch and black crappie. Their efforts ensured the pond was brimming with excitement, creating an unforgettable experience for every angler who cast a line.
At the heart of the day were the Veterans: around forty inpatients from Tomah VA, joined by an impressive group of eighty-six Tomah Middle School volunteers from Team 7-2. These young helpers paired with the Veterans, assisting with baiting hooks, casting lines, and sharing stories. Their laughter and enthusiasm filled the pond area, making every moment brighter.
A Community Effort
This event was a testament to the power of community partnership. Coordinated by CDCE, it brought together VA staff, community organizations, and local students to create an unforgettable experience. Every detail reflected teamwork—from prepping fishing rods to planning tasty meals.
Community partners played pivotal roles. The Vernon County American Legion’s famed catfish was a highlight, while Genoa National Fish Hatchery generously stocked the pond with five hundred lively rainbow trout. The American Legion 7th District provided prizes, ensuring every catch felt special. Friends of the Upper Mississippi handled the cooked the food, serving delicious fish to refuel the anglers.
La Crosse Fish & Wildlife Services attended to weigh and measure catches, while also cleaning the pond and equipping volunteers with extra poles. District 11 Leadership Team from WI VFW kept everyone hydrated, handing out water bottles to Veterans and volunteers.
VA Teamwork in Action
Behind the scenes, VA staff helped make everything seamless. Roads and Ground staff meticulously prepared the pond area. Clinical Dieticians ensured all had nametags indicating dietary needs and Food Service staff ensured Veterans were provided timely breakfasts, so every Veteran started the day nourished. Recreation staff orchestrated event logistics and addressed any accessibility considerations. Both Nursing and recreation were at event monitoring and supporting Veterans throughout the morning. Their attentive presence ensured Veterans could relax and fully enjoy the festivities, knowing help was always nearby. Jennifer Bailey, the Green Environmental Management System coordinator, shared wisdom and support for any last-minute needs.
And of course, VA volunteers brought essential energy: prepping poles, cutting worms, and acting as student engagement coordinators, making sure every Veteran felt supported and every student empowered.
A Celebration for All
As the day unfolded, the weather was nothing short of gorgeous. Sunlight glittered on the water, Veterans and students alike shared infectious smiles, and the excitement of landing a prize catch was contagious. For Veterans who fishing wasn’t their favorite, there were plenty of other ways to connect and have fun. They enjoyed visiting and sharing stories with students, or participating in outdoor games like bean bags or ladder ball. These relaxing alternatives ensured everyone could join the celebration in a way that felt most comfortable and meaningful.
The laughter, camaraderie, and heartfelt interactions showed the true spirit of the VA community. Thanks to everyone’s dedication, the Tomah VA Annual Fishing Tournament was not just an event—it was a celebration of partnership and gratitude. CDCE extends deep appreciation to all for making this tradition a success, ensuring our Veterans felt honored, supported, and connected to the community.
