Journey to Wellness: Inspiring Stories from Veterans and VA Staff - Featuring Veteran Sandy
Veteran Sandy’s journey with Whole Health began in February 2025, though she doesn’t quite recall how she first connected with the program—perhaps through a consult or word of mouth. What she does know is that stepping into Whole Health felt natural; as a long-time distance runner and vegetarian, Sandy was familiar with prioritizing her well-being and healthy lifestyle, so she had no hesitation about giving Whole Health a try.
Once Sandy began participating, she gravitated toward the women’s groups. The camaraderie she found there, and the sense of community—especially among fellow women Veterans—was something she never experienced before. The groups became a safe space where everyone was equal, sharing crafts, fitness sessions, and even cooking demonstrations. Sandy loved how new activities continually offered fresh learning opportunities.
Her group leader proved to be a key motivator and support. With gentle encouragement, reminders, and even coming to get Sandy for group meetings, the group leader helped Sandy stay connected and engaged. The encouragement made all the difference, transforming her routine from solitary and isolated to social and welcoming.
Sandy noticed positive changes that surprised her. Where she once sat in her room, intimidated and reluctant to socialize, now she eagerly anticipated seeing the other women Veterans. She became more open, confident, and felt truly part of a supportive community.
To other Veterans, Sandy wants to share a simple message: “At least give it a try.” She understands how hard it can be to break the cycle of isolation, but Whole Health offers a welcoming space, especially through the women’s groups. No one is better than anyone else, and the sense of equality fosters belonging. The crafts, fitness, and cooking demos bring joy and learning, and Sandy is grateful for how Whole Health has enriched her life.
