Journey to Wellness: Inspiring Stories from Veterans and VA Staff - Featuring VA Staff Member Jennifer Conzemius

As a mother of three and Chief of the Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE), I’ve learned that prioritizing my own wellbeing is essential to effectively support Veterans, volunteers, and colleagues. Previously, as a Recreation Therapist, I saw the powerful impact of wellness activities on both Veterans and staff. Whole Health has truly transformed my life—both personally and professionally.

I became involved in Whole Health by attending classes like yoga, spin bikes, resistance bands, and after-work sessions with our former Whole Health clinical manager. Staying active has always been important to me, but as a busy mom, consistency was a challenge. Over the past five years, I’ve made strength training and self-care a true priority. This focus helped me manage stress and stay grounded—especially during tougher times like the COVID pandemic.

Today, I regularly attend in-person yoga and sound baths, and I love using the walking pad at my desk—sometimes reaching 10,000 steps during meetings without leaving my office. These movement breaks are vital in my largely administrative role. Short yoga and sound bath sessions offer a welcome pause, and aromatherapy with sweet orange and peppermint keeps my energy up. Walks around campus with friends are always a highlight of my day.

Since starting my Whole Health journey, I’ve built habits that have boosted my physical activity, reduced stress, and improved my overall wellbeing. My colleagues see the difference, and I enjoy encouraging others to get involved—whether by sharing class invites or inviting friends along.

If you’re considering Whole Health, my advice: explore what Whole Health offers, wherever you are in your journey. These resources truly meet you where you are and help you achieve meaningful goals. Reach out to our Employee Whole Health Coordinator, Emily, to learn more, try a class, or join the next step challenge. Investing in your wellbeing will not only enrich your own life, but also empower you to better care for those we serve every day.
