Citation Nr: 18150359 Decision Date: 11/15/18 Archive Date: 11/15/18 DOCKET NO. 16-48 751 DATE: November 15, 2018 REMANDED Entitlement to service connection for a lung condition is remanded. REASONS FOR REMAND The Veteran served on active duty from February 1988 to December 1989. Entitlement to service connection for a lung condition is remanded. The Veteran contends that he currently suffers from a lung condition, manifested by coughing and shortness of breath, that was caused by exposure to jet fuel fumes while serving as an avionics guidance and control systems specialist. See September 2016 Appeal to Board of Veterans Appeals. The Veteran’s claims file contains in-service medical treatment for a lung condition, and his personnel records confirm his duties as an avionics guidance and control systems specialist. The Regional Office (RO) denied the Veteran’s claim because there was no medical evidence of a currently diagnosed lung condition. Given the Veteran’s current reports of coughing and shortness of breath, a VA respiratory examination is warranted to determine the nature of the Veteran’s lung condition, and whether any diagnosed lung condition is related to in-service exposure to jet fuel fumes. The matter is REMANDED for the following action: Schedule the Veteran for an examination by an appropriate clinician to determine the nature and etiology of any lung or respiratory condition. The examiner must opine whether it is at least as likely as not related to an in-service injury, event, or disease, including exposure to jet fuel fumes. In rendering an opinion, the examiner should address service treatment records for a lung condition. JENNIFER HWA Veterans Law Judge Board of Veterans’ Appeals ATTORNEY FOR THE BOARD C.
