DC VAMC Women Veterans Health Care Team Hosts Annual Baby Shower

Celebrating New Beginnings and Providing Expecting and Recently Delivered Veteran Families with health care coordination, safety information briefings, and gifts.

The Washington DC VA Medical Center's Women Veterans Health Care Team closed out the month of May with a heartwarming celebration — the facility's Annual Baby Shower, honoring 39 expecting and recently delivered Veteran families. Among the celebrated families, one welcomed the extra-special joy of twins.

The festively decorated event brought together the full spectrum of support that DC VAMC's Women Veterans Program has to offer, providing attendees with maternity care coordination, essential health and safety resources, and an abundance of generosity from donors across the local area. Gifts, food, and supplies were donated through the DC VAMC Center for Development and Civic Engagement, with contributions from VA Central Office employees, Veteran Service Organizations, and local community businesses — including Mission BBQ, whose lunch added a delicious touch to the afternoon.

Families left better equipped and better informed, thanks to focused educational presentations delivered by three distinguished partners. The District Department of Transportation led an interactive session on Car Seat Safety, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development shared critical Safe Sleep Campaign information, and the American Red Cross provided hands-on Infant CPR training — ensuring every parent walked away with potentially life-saving knowledge. Also, there were information booths staffed by DC VAMC health care teams representing Gynecology and Pharmacy Services, the Military Sexual Trauma program, and Occupational Therapy.

DC VAMC Medical Center Director Vamsee Potluri was on hand to open the event, setting the tone with remarks that underscored the medical center's deep commitment to the health and well-being of Women Veterans and their growing families. Women Veterans and their families expressed appreciation for the shower, camaraderie, and the opportunity to engage one-on-one and face-to-face with their DC VAMC Women’s Health team.
