Imaging Procedures

If you have an upcoming imaging procedure (Cat scan, MRI) here is a quick reference guide for all associated procedures. Please select from the procedures below to see the instructions required for your appointment.

UGI (UPPER GI) PRE-APPOINTMENT

NIGHT BEFORE TEST:

 

  1. NO FOOD/DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT.

 

MORNING OF TEST:

  1. NO FOOD/DRINK.
  2. If you are diabetic on an oral agent: DO NOT TAKE YOUR PILL FOR BLOOD SUGAR MORNING OF PROCEDURE.
  3. If you are diabetic on insulin: TAKE 1/2 DOSE MORNING OF PROCEDURE. 

 

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment.  You will need to 

provide your Photo ID and Insurance Card(s) upon check in for your 

appointment and notify the clerk if this is a new insurance.

 

MEANS TEST: IF YOU ARE A VETERAN SUBJECT TO THE ANNUAL MEANS TEST, PLEASE

COMPLETE THE MEANS TEST FORM GIVEN TO YOU AT CHECK-IN OR VISIT THE

ENROLLMENT OFFICE (1A-171) AT LEAST 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT.

 

MAMMOGRAM PRE-APPOINTMENT

 DO NOT WEAR ANY DEODORANT OR POWDER to your Mammogram

Appointment. You may bring it along with you to apply after the exam is

completed. 

 

If you have any previous mammograms, please bring those with you for

comparison purposes.

 

DEXA PRE-APPOINTMENT

IF WITHIN ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THIS EXAM YOU HAVE HAD OR ARE GOING TO HAVE 

ANY EXAM THAT REQUIRES/REQUIRED (DRINKING OR INJECTION OF BARIUM AND/OR CONSTRAST MEDIA) PLEASE INFORM RADIOLOGY TO PROPERLY SCHEDULE YOUR EXAM

  1. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment. You will need to provide your Photo ID and Insurance Card(s) upon check-in for your appointment and notify the clerk if this is a new insurance.

CT ORAL CONRAST PRE-APPOINTMENT

PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR CT SCAN APPOINTMENT:

 1) Check-in 1 hour before appointment time to drink the required 

oral contrast.

 

 

CT ENTEROGRAPHY PRE-APPOINTMENT

PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR CT SCAN APPOINTMENT:

1) Check-in 1 hour before appointment time to drink the required 

oral contrast.

2) Do not eat or drink anything 4 HOURS before your exam. 

 3) Required medication may be taken with a small amount of water.

 

 

MRI PRE-PREP APPOINTMENT

 MRI Screening form and other forms will be completed prior to exam 

time.

 

NO SERVICE DOGS WILL BE ALLOWED INTO MRI ZONES 2, 3, OR 4. IF PATIENT 

COMES WITH SERVICE DOG AND DOES NOT HAVE SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF THE 

SERVICE DOG WHILE HAVING MRI, THE PATIENT WILL HAVE TO BE RESCHEDULED.

 

ALL BODY PIERCINGS OR JEWELRY MUST BE REMOVED PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT, 

PLEASE LEAVE THESE AND ALL JEWELRY AT HOME.  YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE 

SAFETY OF SUCH ITEMS.

 

PATIENTS WITH IMPLANTS OR STENTS, MUST PROVIDE IDENTIFICATION

CARD WHICH DESCRIBES MAKE/MODEL OF IMPLANT.

PLEASE NOTE, IF CARD IS NOT PROVIDED EXAM W ILL NOT  BE PERFORMED.

 

 

 

NUCLEAR GENERAL PRE APPOINTMENT

   PLEASE ONLY FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE NUCLEAR MED DAY CLINIC.

 

Your provider has ordered one of the following procedures. Please only

follow the instructions marked with an X.

                                                                 

___Brain Scan-injection of Radioactive agent, 30-minute scan-no prep

 

___Bone Scan-injection of Radioactive agent, return 3 hours later and 30. 

   minute scan- no prep

 

___Muga Scan- injection of Radioactive agent- than scan for 1 hour

 

___Parathyroid-injection of Radioactive agent-scan for 15 minutes, return.

   2 hours later and 45-minute scan

 

___Do not drink or eat for 4 hours.

 

____ No preparation is required for your exam.

 

NO Children or Expecting Mother's permitted in the area.

 

 

 

NUCLEAR PET SCAN PRE APPOINTMENT

 IMPORTANT PET SCAN INSTRUCTIONS

FROM BEGINNING TO END, THE TEST TAKES ABOUT 1.5-2 HOURS

 

NON-DIABETIC INSTRUCTIONS

1. DO NOT EAT FOOD OR DRINK EXCEPT WATER 6 HRS BEFORE APPOINTMENT.

2. TAKE YOUR PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS AS NORMAL.

3. MAINTAIN HYDRATION:(DRINK PLENTY OF WATER)UNLESS PHYSICIAN INSTRUCTS 

OTHERWISE.

 

DIABETIC INSTRUCTIONS

1. DO NOT TAKE ANY INSULIN (4) HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT

2. DO NOT TAKE ANY OTHER DIABETIC MEDICATION AFTER MIDNIGHT

3. DO NOT EAT ANY FOOD OR DRINK, EXCEPT WATER (4) HOURS PRIOR PET SCAN

4. TAKE ALL OTHER PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS AS NORMAL

5. MAINTAIN HYDRATION:(DRINK PLENTY OF WATER) UNLESS INSTRUCTED OTHERWISE

6. 24 HOURS PRIOR TO EXAM:  EAT A LOW CARBOHYDRATE DIET (LIMIT 

BREAD,PASTA,ETC) AND EAT A HIGH PROTEIN/FAT DIET (CHICKEN,EGGS,STEAK)

 

MORNING OF EXAM

IF YOU CHECK AND YOUR SUGAR IS HIGHER THAN: 180 MG/DL OR     

LOWER THAN: 70 MG/DL THIS IS OUT OF RANGE, PLEASE CALL EXT

NUCLEAR STRESS TEST PRE APPOINTMENT

NUCLEAR STRESS TEST INSTRUCTIONS

1. The Nuclear Stress Test will take 2-4hrs

 

2. DO NOT TAKE 24HRS Prior to Test Atenolol, Metoprolol(Lopressor)

Verapamil(Calan,Isoptin), Diltiazem(Cardizem,Dilacor) Propanolol(Inderal) 

Labatolol (Normodyne), Acebutolol(Sectral), Betaxolol(Kerlone),

Carvedilol(Coreg) Sotalol(Betapace), NADOLOL, BISOPROLOL.

Take all other medications.

 

3. No Caffeinated or DeCaffeinated Products for 24HRS eg: coffee,tea, 

including decaffinated soda, chocolate (water,juice or milk is okay)

 

4. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK 4HRS BEFORE TEST (water is okay for medications not

listed above).

 

5. IF YOU ARE A DIABETIC, TAKE 1/2 THE USUAL DOSE OF YOUR INSULIN ON THE 

MORNING OF THE TEST(if you feel that your blood sugar is low,you may have

orange juice.

 

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTION MAY LEAD TO YOUR TEST BEING 

CANCELLED

 

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment except if your 

appointment is at 7am we open @ 7am. 

 

NUCLEAR THYROID PRE APPOINTMENT

Your Nuclear Thyroid test requires 2 days.  This test evaluates thyroid 

function and size by measuring the amount of orally ingested radioactive 

iodine that accumulates in the thryoid for imaging.  You will be asked to 

swallow a capsule then return 4-6 hours later for pictures (40min).  You 

will then be asked to return the next day for 15min.

 

Please follow Special Instructions 

 

Do not eat or drink 4hrs prior to exam time (a little water for other 

medications, not listed below is ok) 

 

Amoidarone     Contact Nuclear Medicine Dept

Levothyroxine (Synthroid)   (Do not take for 4 weeks)

Wait 4 weeks for Nuclear Thyroid exam after any Iodinated X-ray Contrast 

Materials procedure

STOP Food sources with large amounts of iodine for 1 week.  ex (Sea Food, 

Kelp, Cough syrup, Multivitamins, Table Salt)

Propylthiouracil (PTU)  (Do not take for 3 days)

Tapozole (Do not take for 3 days)

 

Special medication, specifically for your test will be ordered 24hrs 

before the appointment.  It is very important that you keep this 

appointment. However, should you need to change or cancel the 

appointment, please contact the Nuclear Medicine Department between 

7:30am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday at .

BARIUM ENEMA/ COLON AIR PRE APPOINTMENT

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS- BARIUM ENEMA/COLON AIR PREPARATION

 

MORNING BEFORE EXAM:

 

1)Have a liquid breakfast (no solid food), then CLEAR LIQUIDS ONLY.

2)Continue clear liquid diet only, drinking as much water as possible

  until bedtime.

3) GOLYTELY OR COLYTE: Begin 2PM by following mixing instructions on jug.

   DO NOT ADD ANY SUGAR OR SUGAR CONTAINING FLAVORS TO MIX.

4)DULCOLAX(Bisacodyl) TABLETS: TAKE (2) TABLETS 6 PM NIGHT BEFORE EXAM.

 

***NO FOOD OR DRINK (except meds) AFTER 12AM NIGHT BEFORE EXAM***

***REMEMBER TO DRINK PLENTY OF WATER NIGHT BEFORE THE EXAM UNTIL BEDTIME***

 

MORNING OF EXAM:

 

1) Take any oral medications with sip of water.

2) If you are diabetic on insulin, take 1/2 dose before exam.

 

PLEASE ARRIVE 30MINS PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT.

 

 

 

ESOPHOGRAM PRE APPOINTMENT

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment. You will need to 

provide your Photo ID and Insurance Card(s) upon check in for your 

appointment and notify the clerk if this is a new insurance.

 

MEANS TEST: IF YOU ARE A VETERAN SUBJECT TO THE ANNUAL MEANS TEST, PLEASE

COMPLETE THE MEANS TEST FORM GIVEN TO YOU AT CHECK-IN OR VISIT THE

ENROLLMENT OFFICE (1A-171) AT LEAST 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT.

 

 

SMALL BOWEL PRE APPOINMENT

         

NIGHT BEFORE TEST:

 

  1. NO FOOD/DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT.

 

MORNING OF TEST:

  1. NO FOOD/DRINK.
  2. If you are diabetic on an oral agent: DO NOT TAKE YOUR PILL FOR BLOOD SUGAR MORNING OF PROCEDURE.
  3. If you are diabetic on insulin: TAKE 1/2 DOSE MORNING OF PROCEDURE. 

 

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment.  You will need to 

provide your Photo ID and Insurance Card(s) upon check in for your

ULTRASOUND PRE APPOINTMENT

PLEASE DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING SIX HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR EXAM. 

 

NO GUM OR CANDY. 

 

REQUIRED MEDICATION MAY BE TAKEN WITH A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER.
