“This We’ll Defend,” once a motto she lived by in uniform is now a promise she carries into motherhood, as tiny hands wrap around her fingers and guide the way.

U.S. Army Veteran Ja’Quell Willis has traded combat boots for baby shoes, now teaching her son and daughter how to tie their own. Her mission may have changed, but her commitment remains just as strong.

From pregnancy through newborn milestones and beyond, the VA has been a steady source of support on her journey into motherhood.

“With a sigh of relief,” Ja’Quell shares, “The West Palm Beach VA Maternity Care Coordinator and Certified Lactation Counselor Lisa Butterworth has guided me through every stage during pregnancy and even after. She and the Women’s Clinic team made sure I had everything I needed from supplies, equipment, breast pumps, and more. I am so grateful.”

That connection became more than care, it became trust. The very first to know of her exciting news of mom-to-be was her trusted companion, Lisa.

With the support she received, Ja’Quell found something invaluable: time. Time to be present. Time to bond.

“Because of the VA, I am a more present mom,” she says. “I have learned my children over time, and that connection matters more than any book or advice.”

The Women’s Clinic offers comprehensive lactation services, including prenatal and postpartum counseling, a dedicated lactation room, and access to certified lactation consultants - ensuring women Veterans receive care that understands their unique journeys.

In honor of Mother’s Day, Ja’Quell encourages fellow women Veterans to seek out the same support and reminds all mothers: “Let go of the pressure to have it all figured out. Your baby does not need a perfect mom, they need a present, loving one. Always lead with love.”

For Ja’Quell, presence over perfection is not just advice, it is the foundation of her motherhood journey.

Reflecting on the care she received, she smiles and adds, “I’ll always be grateful for Lisa. If I ever have another baby, she’ll be the first to know.”

From baby bump to first steps, the VA is there for every chapter, standing beside women Veterans as they navigate motherhood, one milestone at a time.
