During National Nurses Week, we recognize the compassion, dedication, and impact of nurses across the country.

At West Texas VA Health Care System, one family is a powerful example of how nursing is more than a career—it’s a legacy of service passed from one generation to the next.

For Susan Jackson and her daughters, Paige Johnson and Megan Martinez, caring for Veterans is not just what they do—it’s who they are.

A Legacy of Compassion

Jackson, a nurse in the Specialty Clinic, has spent years providing hands-on care to Veterans with complex and ongoing health needs. Known for her calm demeanor and deep compassion, she takes pride in building relationships with her patients and ensuring they feel supported every step of the way. Her work often involves coordinating care, educating Veterans about their conditions, and advocating for their well-being.

“I became a nurse because I knew I wanted to help people and hopefully make a difference in their lives,” Jackson said. “When people are sick, even a small gesture or helping hand makes a difference.”

Her passion for nursing made a lasting impression at home. Growing up, her daughters saw firsthand the dedication it takes to serve others, and the difference one nurse can make in a patient’s life.

Following in Her Footsteps

That inspiration led both Johnson and Martinez to pursue careers where they too, could make an impact.

Johnson now serves as a nurse in the Women Veterans Clinic, where she provides specialized care tailored to the unique needs of women who have served. From coordinating appointments to offering personalized support, she helps create an environment where women Veterans feel welcomed, respected, and empowered in their health care journey.

“Women Veterans have unique experiences, and it’s important they feel seen and heard,” Johnson said. “Being able to support them and advocate for their care is incredibly meaningful to me.”

Supporting Veterans in Every Setting

Her sister, Martinez, plays a different—but equally important—role on the Community Care call team. While she may not always interact with Veterans face-to-face, her work behind the scenes ensures they can access care when and where they need it. She assists with scheduling, answers questions, and helps guide Veterans through the process of receiving care in their communities.

“Sometimes a simple phone call can make a big difference to get Veterans the care they need,” Martinez said. “We help Veterans navigate the system so they can focus on their health.”

One Mission, Shared Purpose

Although their day-to-day responsibilities vary, the three share a common mission rooted in compassion, service, and a deep respect for Veterans.

“Seeing my daughters choose this path means everything to me,” Jackson said. “Nursing is a calling, and to know they feel that same calling—it makes me incredibly proud.”

For Johnson and Martinez, working in the same health care system as their mother adds an extra layer of meaning to their work.

“We grew up seeing the impact our mom had caring for patients (and loved ones),” Johnson said. “It inspired us to follow in her footsteps and serve in our own ways.”

“It’s special knowing we’re all part of the same mission,” Martinez added. “Even though we’re in different roles, we’re working together to care for Veterans.”

Honoring Nurses Week

Their story is a reminder that nursing extends beyond clinical skills—it is built on compassion, connection, and commitment. During National Nurses Week, their shared journey highlights the profound impact nurses have not only on their patients, but also on those closest to them.

At the West Texas VA Health Care System, nurses like Jackson, Johnson, and Martinez embody the very best of VA care. Together, they are continuing a legacy of service—one rooted in family, strengthened by purpose, and dedicated to those who have served our nation.

This National Nurses Week, their story stands as a tribute to nurses everywhere who answer the call to care, inspire the next generation, and make a lasting difference in the lives of Veterans every single day.
